| Season 2 brings about great change to the lives of those in Tree Hill. Everyone adjusts to Nathan and Haley's marriage -- some take it well, but others, such as Deb and Dan, plot to break the newlyweds up. Other new relationships are formed including Keith and Jules, Karen and Andy, Peyton and Jake, Brooke and Felix, and the beginning of a father-son relationship between Dan and Lucas. However, each one of the new relationships are tested and ultimately broken. Nathan and Haley's marriage is also broken apart with the arrival of Chris Keller and the emergence and success of Haley's musical career. But as new relationships are broken apart, Nathan and Lucas, in contrast to season 1, become closer as both brothers and friends.
Following Dan's heart attack, Lucas and Nathan are both tested for the genetic heart condition that caused Dan's heart attack, HCM. Though Lucas lies that he does not have HCM, tests show that he does and makes a deal with Dan in order to pay for the medication needed for his condition and in order for his mother to not know about it. While living with Dan as a part of the deal, Lucas uncovers two scams that Dan is running -- one at the dealership, skimming money off of purchases, and one involving hiring a woman to fall in love with Keith then break his heart.
As season 2 came to a close, Nathan moves back home and signs papers that would annul his marriage to Haley. However, after Lucas and Brooke visit Haley in New York, Haley decides to come home to Nathan on the same day that Dan is trapped in the dealership after it had been lit on fire by an unknown person. Several people had the motive to murder Dan -- Karen and Andy after Dan used Andy's relationship with Karen to get him fired; Haley after Dan brought her annulment papers he talked Nathan into signing; Deb after making her life hell; Lucas after he discovered Dan's scam at the dealership; Keith, after he learns that Dan hired Jules; and Jules after her relationship with Keith is over due to Dan. | |
