Except for basketball, Nathan and Lucas Scott have nothing in common, but their mutual father will forever connect their lives in ways they could never imagine. Their father, Dan Scott, chose to abandon Lucas and raise Nathan in his image – a life of luxury and Tree Hill High Ravens basketball. Lucas, on the other hand, was raised by his single mother, Karen, and shares Nathan’s love for hoops, but keeps his game to the river court park. However, when the Tree Hill High coach, Whitey Durham, is in need of another player, Lucas and Nathan’s lives are forever entwined as the brothers face off on the court where Lucas battles for a spot on the team.

Meanwhile, Nathan and Peyton continue to drift apart and Keith helps Karen deal with her issues with Dan after Karen refuses to go to Lucas' game because Dan will be there.

Wanting Nathan and Lucas to reconcile their differences after taking their frustrations out on each other on the court, Whitey throws the brothers off of the bus 30 miles from home. When they encounter a group of rival basketball players, Nathan and Lucas are forced to team up to out-smart the group and get home in one piece. Meanwhile, Brooke, who was injured during the game, has to have Peyton drive her home after she takes a few too many pain pills. After an unlikely series of events, Peyton has Haley come along for help. Back in Tree Hill, Karen and Keith attend a business dinner that turns into a brawl when Deb and Dan are seated at the same table as them.

After the guys begin to use Nathan's apartment as party-central, Haley decides to throw a small "take back the party" party. However, small soon turns into large and Haley panics when things begin to spin out of control. Meanwhile, Nathan gets a job at a pretzel stand at the mall to pay his rent, much to Dan's horror, and Brooke, after finding out that she wasn't one of the "close friends" invited to the party, runs into Nicki at the bar and the two decide to crash the party.

Dan is named temporary head coach of the basketball team when Whitey has to have surgery on his eyes, but no one thinks it's a good idea except Dan himself. Haley finds questionable material on Nathan's laptop, leading Haley to pull away from Nathan and leading Nathan to realize that he's inadvertently pressuring Haley into having sex with him. Meanwhile, after a mishap at the mall involving Nicki and Jenny, Jake becomes upset at Peyton and Brooke. Elsewhere, Keith tells Karen that he's leaving Tree Hill, Dan finally agrees to a divorce, and Lucas struggles in making a difficult decision.

Dan leads the Tree Hill Ravens in their first playoff game and Lucas and Nathan have to deal with the constant abuse that Dan dishes out to them. Dan also confronts Haley about her relationship with Nathan, and his threats lead Haley to rethink their relationship. Meanwhile, Whitey learns the severity of his medical condition and Dan suffers a medical condition of his own when he stumbles into a shocking situation. Elsewhere, Keith packs up to move to Charleston and Nathan and Haley take a surprising step in their relationship.
