Episode Recap

In Los Angeles, a husband, Henry, leaves for his third shift night watchman job, leaving his wife Emily. As he drives away, he hears a noise from a construction site across the street. Seeing nothing, he drives away unaware that a man with a red mark on his left wrist is watching from the shadows.

At the house, the woman hears a noise and goes into the next room to see an overturned lamp and an open front door. Stepping on a piece of glass, she limps into the next room to tend to it but the lights flicker and she sees... something in the shadows. She runs through the house and runs out through the garage to her car, but the creature grabs her and drags her away.

The next day, the police arrive at the house as does crime reporter Perri Beacon with the Beacon and photographer Jain McManus. The police inform Perri that a reporter from the paper is already there. She goes inside to find a man examining the crime scene: Carl Kolchak, who claims he's got the real story. Perri is less then thrilled as Carl notes that Gale returned home to find his wife missing, and his confidential sources have told him Henry is the main suspect. However, he refuses to tell her.

They go back to the Beacon and meet with managing editor Tony Vincenzo, who tells Carl the story is Perri's. She calls the head detective, Clay, and asks him about the chance of Henry being the murderer. Clay denies it and Perri demands to know who Carl's sources are before she uses his information. He refuses to tell her but does reveal that Emily was pregnant, giving Henry a motive.

In the desert, dirt bikers are riding when one of them goes off of his bike and finds Emily's corpse.

Perri and Jain go to the station where Henry is being held for questioning, after discovering that Emily's fetus was torn from her body. They wonder how Carl knew what happened. Inside, Emily's brother Ed Medlock and his wife Trish and daughter Julie arrive and Medlock and his wife go inside to identify the sister-in-law. Carl talks to the girl, Julie, and tries to comfort her. Ed storms out, believing Henry is the killer, and they pull Julie away.

Back at the office, Carl wonders if Julie believed Henry was innocent, noting a look she directed at him. Perri is skeptical and wonders why Carl won't let the story go, but he just walks away.

The Medlocks are at a hotel when Ed goes out to get food and Trish takes a shower, while Julie watches TV. A figure appears outside the window and then something tries to open the door. It bursts in and moves through the room, unaware that Julie is hiding beneath the bed. It goes into the bathroom, attacks Trish, and then yanks the bed away as Julie screams.

Ed appeals to the killer at a press conference, while Carl checks the story which is now being blamed on a serial killer. He comes back to the office and tries to get an interview with Henry Gale who is now cleared, only to find out Perri has already got the story. As they drive, she notices half of a Gumby figure hanging from the rear view mirror. They talk to Henry who mentions hearing a coyote, and Carl pursues the matter as much as he can. Both Perri and Jain wonder about Carl's interest.

That night, Perri does a web search on Carl and finds out he was an award-winning reporter in Las Vegas and involved in a FBI murder investigation. Coming up with a dead link, she calls the head investigator, Agent Bernard Fain. When he hears she's calling about Kolchak, he demands to know where Carl is. He says that no one in Las Vegas was willing to write the true story: that Kolchak is a murderer.

Jain calls Carl in and shows him photos from around the house, with animal tracks. They also find a photo with a shadowy unidentified animal in the background.

Outside Los Angeles, Perri meets with Fain who reveals they're at the place where Kolchak's wife was killed. He explains that Carl said they pulled over in the storm and then something pulled Irene out of the car... something that wasn't human. the next morning Carl found her body, but he wasn't charged with murder due to insufficient evidence.

Carl and Jain go to the Merdocks' motel and try to find more animal tracks, determining there's at least two of the creatures. There's no drag marks or blood, indicating they carried her off. Carl wonders if Julie is still alive. They're interrupted when Fain, Perri, and the police arrive to arrest Carl due to the similarities between the death of his wife and the recent killings.

Vincenzo goes to the police station where Perri is waiting. She wonders why Tony hired a suspected murderer but Vincenzo doesn't think it's her business. He explains that five years ago he was working in Las Vegas when Carl brought him a corruption case that made both their careers. However, when the head crook was convicted, Carl missed the story to tend to his sick wife. Vincenzo doesn't believe Carl killed Irene. Carl is released and Perri drives him home, where she apologizes for getting him arrested. He notes she doesn't think he's innocent but then they notice his front door is busted open. They go inside and find the place has been ransacked, presumably by Agent Fain.

Carl offers Perri a beer and she goes into his office, which is covered with maps and photos of grisly deaths. One of them is of Carl's dead wife, and he points out a red mark on her left wrist that wasn't there before her death. He then shows her more photos of people who died with the same mark. However, they died of totally different reasons... but all in bizarre ways. Carl figures there's a connection, even if he doesn't know what it is. Perri realizes Carl didn't have a confidential source and he admits they found the body of a drifter who died the same way. Carl admits he couldn't go to anyone, but notes that Irene was pregnant when she died and the killers tore the fetus from her body. Carl doesn't know if Emily Gale had the mark on the body, and even some of the people he's been investigating had the mark. They're interrupted when Jain calls with a story of wild animals near a girls' school.

Carl and Perri drive to the school where Jain has found more footprints but the motion sensor lights have driven off the creatures. Perri prepares to leave, disgusted, while Carl sprays the area with a chemical. As she goes to borrow Jain's car, she hears a growling noise and something comes after her. Carl hits it with his car and they look at the results: a huge dog-like creature with no skin.

At the coroner's office, the coroner and Fain claim the creature was a coyote and Animal Control cremated the body already. Carl claims it's a cover-up and Emily's body has the same mark, but Perri reveals Fain gave her the photos and there's no mark. Carl asserts that Julie is still alive, there's another creature, and the chemical he sprayed should let them trace it. They drive out into the desert near where Emily Gale's body was found, and drive into a cave. Following Julie's cries, they go into the cave system armed with cattle prods and find her on a ledge over a pit. Carl gets her to jump to him and they run as unearthly howls echo behind them as something comes after them. It grabs Jain as they climb out and Carl manages to pull him free. They get in the car and drive away as the creature slams into the windshield, but they manage to get out and away.

Later, Carl considers his story while Julie is reunited with her mother. The police and Fain investigate the caves but find nothing. Carl writes the story and Perri confronts him, noting how Carl covered up the facts. Carl asserts that the public doesn't want to know what really happened, and when he's has the evidence he'll run the story. Perri warns him that she'll be watching him. As she leaves and Carl writes his story, a red mark is visible on his left wrist.
