Commander Adam Dalgliesh is put on the case when Neville Dupayne, who worked at his family's museum, is found burned to death. The museum staff point out that the scene of Neville's death looks just like one of their exhibitions, the Murder Room, which is about some of Britain's most brutal killings. Then a prostitute is found murdered, again corresponding to a display in the Murder Room.
