Episode discussion for: 08x05 | Mr. Monk Takes the Stand (Sep 11, 2009)
Jay Mohr as a defense attorney: will he be able to bring Monk down as the advertising suggests? Or will he get his comeuppance?
And trivia of the week: did you know that Tony Shalhoub and Jay Mohr worked together on the 1998 movie Paulie together?
And don't forget to not just poll here, but vote for the episode after it airs and you get a chance to see it. |

Yeah, but it looks like one of those episodes where they have Monk go overboard on the OCDisms so Mohr's character can make him look incompetent.
It also raises the question: do we want Monk to have to deal with real-life OCD issues? They've almost entirely avoided mentioning OCD by name over the years. They never tell people he has OCD or even just "mental issues". When he refuses to shake hands, Natalie and Sharona never say "Well, he's got a mental issue about germs", they just leave him hanging and people thinking he's an idiot.
So in this episode (speculation here, no spoilers), it appears that they're going to have Mohr make Monk look incompetent. But they (the writers or the character) can't actually say he's mentally challenged, because no judge would let a witness with Monk's degree of mental competency testify in the first place. It'll be interesting to see what they do... |

So basically, they turned Monk into a raving psycho. Hurmm...
It also seems like the overall plot was very similar to that of Mr. Monk and the Foreign Man, where the killer kills one person while busy killing another. |

A good episode for the mentally incapacited ,what a wast of time this one was.
They need a new writer with good ideias asap, old formulas like this thing of jury/judge/lawyer with dumb questions, witness that sudently get dumb and can answer simple questions , looks like the writer is trying to fool the audience with children talk.
i give it 4/10 just because i like monk ! |

Yeah, like GADFLY pointed out it was a rehash of another episode.

The rehash element wasn't bad, but having it just a few episodes close to the previous one didn't help.
Other than Monk having a total embarrassing breakdown in court, and the familiar/rehashed plot, it wasn't a bad episode. They gave Disher something useful to do once they got the initial incompetence scene out of the way. Disher and Natalie being supportive was nice. The initial murder alibi was clever.
I've never really liked Dr. Bell, though, and he didn't do anything for me this time either. |
