David Gitelson, back-up quarterback for the Condors, has his limo driver Shawn Metzger drive him and his girlfriend from one party to the next. Once they leave, Metzger takes Gitelson’s secret team playbook and calls a man saying they only have an hour. A little later, Metzger meets with his contact: Coach Binsack, head of the opposing team, the Wildcats.
The next day, Gitelson is in the Condors’ locker room and looks through his playbook. He runs outside and confronts Metzger, who panics, grabs a tire iron, and hits Gitelson over the head.
A few days earlier, Monk and Natalie visit the station while Stottlemeyer, Disher, and the others are discussing the playoff game between the Condors and Wildcats. Natalie prods Monk into revealing that he received a pair of press box tickets and an all-access pass from Bob Costas, who owes him a personal favor. Monk plans on going and Natalie suggests he take Stottlemeyer using the second ticket.
On the day of the game, Stottlemeyer and Monk arrive and make their way through the tailgaters in the parking lot, passing by one fan in full make-up who is sitting in a lounge chair and has already passed out.
At the station, Disher is left alone to man the place and tries to watch the game on a miniature TV. He finally gives up and tries to haul a big-screen TV down the stairs so he can watch the game.
Metzger siphons off gasoline from his limo and pours it into a barbeque grill. Stottlemeyer and Monk prepare to go into the stadium and Monk struggles to get the sealed ticket envelope open. As they go in, there’s a huge explosion before them. Monk insists that they investigate and Stottlemeyer reluctantly goes back. The paramedics are tending to the injuries, including the grill owner, Chet Walsh. Everyone is fine, and Monk investigates the grill. Stottlemeyer thinks it was an accident but Monk points out that charcoal grills don’t explode and there are traces of gasoline.
Monk talks to Chet who says he saw Gitelson that morning. Chet accuses Cory, a Wildcat fan, of sabotaging the grill as part of the rivalry between the teams’ fans. Stottlemeyer hastily agrees but Monk pushes the matter and they go to talk to the Wildcat fans. Two of them are friends of Stottlemeyer’s from high school. They ask if he can take care of a speeding ticket for them. The time stamp is stamped 35 minutes earlier, and the grill exploded after that: the ticket provides them with an alibi proving they didn’t sabotage the grill.
Natalie brings pizza to the station and discovers that he’s watching the game in the stadium because he couldn’t get the plasma TV down the stairs. They set up in the stairwell, watching the game at an angle.
Monk is convinced the explosion was deliberate and Stottlemeyer accuses him of finding crimes everywhere and over thinking things. Monk reluctantly gives in but notices a poster of a Condors championship ring. He recognizes the ring from earlier: the passed-out fan was wearing it. They go back and realize that the fan isn’t passed out: he’s dead. They pull off the wig and makeup and discover that it’s Gitelson.
Monk and Stottlemeyer talk to a drunk Chet, who has trouble remembering if he saw Gitelson as he claimed. Disher arrives and they discover Gitelson’s playback beneath his chair. As Monk thumbs through it, they talk to Metzger, Gitelson’s driver, and Monk notices he has a smoke of charcoal on his jacket. He also smells gasoline on Metzger and asks him where he got it from. Metzger claims he doesn’t remember. Disher tells them to go but Monk refuses to drop the matter and talks to Chet. Stottlemeyer finally gives up and demands his ticket, then goes inside without Monk.
As Metzger starts to drive away, Monk notices that there’s a gasoline on the side of the car and concludes the driver has been siphoning gasoline. He accuses Metzger of sabotaging the grill and trying to kill Chet, but Metzger denies everything and leaves. Monk talks to Chet and he finally remembers that Gitelson was yelling “Out of order” as he walked by Gitelson that morning.
Monk uses his all-access pass to get into the stadium with Chet and they start looking for whatever it was that Gitelson thought was out of order. Meanwhile, Stottlemeyer tries to enjoy himself in the press box and passes the time talking to Bob Costas, who wonders where Monk is. As the game continues through the first half, Monk overhears Costas talking about how Wildcats coach Binsack is anticipating all of the Condors’ plays. Monk realizes that when he looked through Gitelson’s playbook earlier, the pages were out of order.
Monk explains to Chet what happened: Metzger took the playbook and photocopied the pages, but got them out of order. Gitelson saw the playbook the next day and realized what happened and went to find Metzger. He walked by Chet on his way out to the parking lot, saying “Out of order.” Metzger panicked and killed him. Running out of time, Metzger dressed the corpse as a fan and put him in a lawn chair as the tailgaters arrived. However, the driver saw Gitelson talk to Chet and realized he had to eliminate the only other possible witness, so he poured gasoline in the grill.
The only evidence against Metzger is the playbook, and Monk figures he’ll try to destroy it. Chet figures that the photocopied playbook pages must be in the Wildcat locker room with Coach Binsack. He and Monk sneak in and try to steal them while the Wildcat team is praying for victory. Monk is forced to run with the book. Outside, Stottlemeyer has finally decided to find his friend and spots Monk. The security guards chase Monk, who passes the book to Stottlemeyer. They pass it back and forth to avoid the guards until finally Disher arrives and catches it.
Monk and Stottlemeyer return to the press box and the Condors win. Gitelson and Metzger are arrested, and Monk cleans up the room. While Costas explains that Monk saved him from a demented, Natalie is left at the station alone and watches on TV in the stairwell.
