!!!!!! This review contains spoilers !!!!!!
In the season premier of Monk, we were reunited with a young woman, Marci Maven, played by Sarah Silverman. We previously didn't know a whole lot about Marci, but it became painfully obvious she has crossed some sort of line between fanatic and wacko. Not only does Marci know everything about Adrian, but she also takes things from his trash and places the items in her house. This even includes wearing Adrian's discarded pants.
This wouldn't be much of a show if there wasn't some sort of case involved. Well in this case, Marci's neighbor was killed and the victim's husband believes Marci's dog was responsible. The odd thing is the dog, Otto, died a few days ago.
When Marci asks Monk for help, he declines. In order to get him to help, Marci buys Monk at the SFPD Bachelor's Auction for $800. Understandably, Adrian isn't exactly pleased about the matter, but once he learns more about the case, the more he warms to the investigation.
When Adrian and Natalie drop by Marci's house, Marci takes them next door and snoop around in the neighbor's shed, which is where the wife's body was found. Inside, Adrian notices a dead tulip petal on a dirt-covered shovel. When the husband arrives, the three leave. On his way out, Adrian notices a hole under the wooden fence. The odd thing is all of the dirt from the hole is on the victim's side of the fence. Also, Adrian finds a dead tulip on Marci's side of the fence. It seems someone on the victim's side of the fence dug the hole with the shovel to frame the dog.
Half-way through the investigation, Marci offers to be Adrian's assistant for free. When Adrian stops and gives it some thought, Natalie takes off for the day, just to let him see what it would be like to work with Marci.
When Adrian and Marci arrive at a lumberyard owned by the victim's husband, Adrian picks up on several clues and puts it all together. When the husband learns of the fact Monk has figured out the plot, he takes Adrian and Marci hostage.
Captain Stottlemeyer, who is eating dinner with his date, Linda, realizes something he missed in the photos from the case. When he examines the photos, it shows the teeth marks were upside down. He leaves and calls Natalie and Randy. Randy has been playing a "Jenga"-like game with a child through part of this episode and isn't in a hurry to stop playing, but when the tower falls, he leaves. The three drop by the lumberyard and save Adrian and Marci from the upset husband.
As far as season openers go, I thought this episode had a fair amount of comedy, but the mystery wasn't difficult to figure out. I was able to determine all of the details of the murder mystery as soon as Marci showed Adrian and Natalie the hair brush. Also, I'm getting more and more disappointed with the fact the show's writers have given up on the real mystery of the show: who killed Trudy?!
