Officer Adam Kirk, an old friend of Stottlemeyer's, steps off a ferris wheel to find the young man he was riding with, dead from a knife in his chest. He is then arrested for murder. Stottlemeyer enlists Monk's help to investigate the case unofficially, even though Monk believes the hair-triggered cop is guilty. Monk then discovers that the bruises on the victim's body were self-inflicted.

Episode Quotes |

Sharona: So you remember how many jelly beans you saw?
Monk: It's a blessing, and a curse. | Monk: (whispering) Should we take the case?
Sharona: I think we should.
Monk: Wait. Talk some more. Make it look like a hard decision.
Sharona: What should we talk about?
Monk: How's Benjy?
Sharona: He's good.
Monk: What grade is he in now?
Sharona: Fifth.
Monk: What's he studying? English, math--
Stottlemeyer: We can hear you. | Sharona: Are you having fun?
Monk: I think so. My head's stopped throbbing. Too many clowns. |

Episode Goofs |
| |
When Monk was cleaning the kitchen of officer Adam Kirk's house, he holds the last plate with his bare hand rather than with the dishcloth. He doesn't even clean his hand with a wipe afterwards. With him being so obsessively clean, he would never have touched a stranger's dirty plate without protection from the germs. | In the beginning of this episode, Captain Stottlemeyer supposedly drives away, but his car's antenna can still be seen there. | With Monk being such a great detective, why didn't he points out that the victim died too quickly after being stabbed to have time to bruise. |
