ABC throws us into the lives of a 3 generation spanning family filmed in a "mockumentary" style. I am not a big fan of "mockumentaries" but that's a personal preference. At least they keep the camera shaking and odd camera movement to a minimum. The style element used most is the "on the couch" interview of the characters which can be quite amusing at times. The actors are fine but not great, it all seems a bit stiff and not very spontaneous which it should be considering the style. Ed "Married with Children" O'Neill looks like he had a few too many plastic surgeries if you ask me. Ed's much younger wife is very funny and the acting and delivery is spot on. The gay couple is refreshingly not your typical effeminate guy and his dominate partner. The pacing is OK but some of the jokes are drawn out too long or repeated too often and become really annoying instead of funny. The writing is solid but nothing really new or unique. I was not too impressed by the Pilot, it was amusing but for me it lacked wit and quirky characters to make it stand out. With excellent fast paced and unique shows like "The Big Bang Theory" or "Better off Ted" this one will have to pick up the pace to stand a chance. of bullshit, there is very little that is offensive about this show. The humor is pretty family friendly and there are a lot of jokes that just go by or happen in the background so if you're not supposed to get them, you won't. Personally I enjoy the writing style, there are big "LOOK HERE" things going on, but if you're paying attention you'll catch things like Luke mimicking Phil in some innocuous way that seems totally natural, even though when Phil did I wanted someone to slap him. I am generally into darker comedies and more adult based drama/action type shows, but Modern Family is really funny. Initially there were some slow spots, but they got it together and went from earning little situational giggles to actual belly laughter. I find Phil to be annoying 90% of the time that he's on screen, but he's developed enough that when he does hit, he hits HARD. The rest of the cast is funny and Jay, as a single character, may even be funnier than Al Bundy even though I don't see the overall show being on that level. This show is too polarizing. It either gets lots of love or unwarranted hate, which I find doesn't even always come from the show itself. I'd definitely recommend at least giving a couple episodes a chance. I agree with Kindjal on some levels, like a very slow start for the show. I did watch the pilot just when it came out, but this show was washed away since i watch ALOT of series. It did catch my eye when they ruined the Emmys for evry other sitcoms and big wins over veteran shows like "Two and a Half Men" and "How I Met Your Mother". Picked up season one, and after few episodes i was hooked. The humor is SPOT on. It will remain of the early work from David Spade or Adam Sandler from the 90's SNL. But its 'modern'. The charecters Phil and Gloria makes this show. Review posted on Tuesday, January 11th 2011 at 10:12 pm |
