Kryptonite, which appears in several episodes, is a fictional element. Each piece of kryptonite was once part of the planet Krypton, which is where the mineral gets its name. During the cataclysm that tore the planet to pieces, tremendous radiation was released, and the planet fragments absorbed most of it, so that they glow in various colors. The most common spectrum accompanies a sickly greenish glow; this form of the mineral weakens anyone from Krypton and would kill them if kept in proximity long enough.
The radiation emitted by kryptonite is not immediately harmful to humans, but recent changes to the continuity (retcons) of the Superman universe have changed this: long term exposure is dangerous even to humans, and carries the same cancer hazard as long term exposure to any other radioisotope.
