Det. Kevin Bernard [Episodes 408-; recurring previously], played by Anthony Anderson

Detective Kevin Bernard comes to the 27th Precinct after leaving Internal Affairs. We first see Bernard when he is called on a case from I.A. to investigate Detective Ed Green. After Bernard realizes that Green is innocent, he helps exonerate him of the crime. However, Green leaves and Bernard comes in to take his place. His relationship with his partner, Detective Cyrus Lupo, begins rocky, but they eventually come to respect each other and work well together.
 
 
D.A. Arthur Branch [S13-S17], played by Fred Dalton Thompson

D.A. Arthur Branch is elected into his position at the start of the 13th Season of Law & Order. Tougher than either D.A. Schiff or Lewin, Branch conveys a more conservative belief than the other D.A.s. Branch worked with E.A.D.A. McCoy and several A.D.A.s while in office before leaving after the 17th Season when E.A.D.A. McCoy takes over as D.A. Fred Dalton Thompson is the only actor to portray the same character on two television shows at the same time, with this show and the short-lived Law & Order: Trial by Jury.
 
 
Capt. Don Cragen [S01-S03; recurring afterwards], played by Dann Florek

Captain Don Cragen is the commanding officer of the 27th Precinct during the first three seasons of Law & Order. We learn that Cragen was formerly Sergent Max Greevey's partner years ago. Greevey is murdered in the premiere of the first season, and both Cragen and Greevey's partner Detective Mike Logan are grief stricken. Cragen also supervised Detective Lennie Briscoe and Sergent Phil Cerreta before leaving the 27th to go and head the Anti-Corruption Task Force. Cragen later re-appears as the Captain of the 16th Precinct that houses the Special Victims Unit squad on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit when the show premieres in 1999.
 
 
A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn [Episodes 254-338], played by Elisabeth Röhm

Serena Southerlyn replaced A.D.A. Abbie Carmichael in the District Attorney's Office. Paired with E.A.D.A. Jack McCoy, Southerlyn had a more liberal view compared to D.A. Arthur Branch, which caused a hard relationship between the two. She was later fired because Branch felt she was too sympathetic for the defendants. It is then we understand that Southerlyn is lesbian. She asks Branch if that is the reason for her dismissal, where he assures her it isn't.

Det. Ed Green [Season 10-], played by Jesse L. Martin (1)

Detective Ed Green became partners with Detective Lennie Briscoe in Season 10, and stayed with him until Briscoe's departure in Season 14. From Seasons 15-16 he was partnered with Detective Joe Fontana. From Seasons 17 to the middle of 18 he was the Senior Detective, being partnered with Detective Nina Cassidy in Season 17 and Detective Cyrus Lupo in Season 18. Personal demons came back to haunt Detective Green during the middle of Season 18 that caused him to be investigated by Internal Affairs. Although he was cleared of the charges, he retired from the force.
 
 
Det. Cyrus Lupo [Season 18-], played by Jeremy Sisto

Detective Cyrus Lupo makes his first appearance in the Season 18 premiere after Detective Nina Cassady is written out of the show. We learn that Detective Lupo comes back from Iraq and is partnered originally with Detective Ed Green, and later Detective Kevin Bernard. He is the second Junior Detective to be promoted to Senior Detective.

Det. Lennie Briscoe [Episodes 53-325], played by Jerry Orbach

Detective Lennie Briscoe is a witty detective that usually plays by the books. He entered the 27th Precinct as the temporary partner of Detctive Mike Logan until it became permanent. Throughout his 11 season tenure, he was partnered with Logan (3-5), Detective Rey Curtis (6-9) and Detective Ed Green (10-14, who left in the 18th Season). He left the 27th to retire at the end of the 14th Season. He later went to the DA's Office as an investigator (See Law & Order: Trial by Jury). Jerry Orbach, the actor playing Lennie Briscoe, passed away during filming of Law & Order: Trial by Jury, taking the character with him.

Lt. Anita Van Buren [Seasons 4-], played by S. Epatha Merkerson

Lt. Anita Van Buren replaced Captain Cragen in Season 4 as the new head of the 27th Precinct. Over the next 12+ years she has overseen the investigations of Detectives Briscoe, Logan, Curtis, Green, Fontana, and others. In Season 20, Lt. Van Buren learns that she has cancer, and embarks on the fight of her lifetime.
 
 
Det. Reynaldo "Rey" Curtis [Seasons 6-9], played by Benjamin Bratt

Detective Curtis is the first of his kind to be on television: a Latino Catholic. For his 4 season tenure, you get to see Curtis go all out on the defendants, as you see his bad temper. He is also is a techomaniac, knowing many things his partner, Detective Briscoe, doesn't.

Curtis left at the end of Season 9 because his wife, Deborah, has MS and wants to spend more time with her and his family so he transferred to a desk job.
 
 
E.A.D.A. Michael Cutter [Seasons 18-], played by Linus Roache

E.A.D.A. Michael Cutter first appears in the Season 18 premiere taking over after Jack McCoy was elected to District Attorney. E.A.D.A. Cutter has referenced previous D.A.s Arthur Branch and Adam Schiff, which can be assumed that he has worked with the Manhattan District Attorney's Office for at least ten years.
 
 
A.D.A. Connie Rubirosa [Seasons 17-], played by Alana De La Garza

A.D.A. Connie Rubirosa first appeared at the start of the 17th Season of the series after Alexandra Borgia was murdered. She worked with Jack McCoy when he was an E.A.D.A. and as a District Attorney. In Season 18, she works with E.A.D.A. Michael Cutter, who has some conflicting feelings towards D.A. McCoy.

D.A. / E.A.D.A. Jack McCoy [E.A.D.A. Seasons 5-17, D.A. Seasons 18-], played by Sam Waterston

D.A. Jack McCoy entered the scene in Season 5 as an Executive Assistant District Attorney after E.A.D.A. Ben Stone left the office. While as an E.A.D.A. Jack McCoy, unlike Stone, wants to win more than feel compassionate about the defendant or show his empathy towards them, although sometime it comes out on rare cases. He prosecutes to the fullest extent of the law, and sometimes even bends them to win his cases. In Season 18, McCoy becomes the new District Attorney after D.A. Arthur Branch leaves mid-term.
 
 
Det. Joe Fontana [S15-S16], played by Dennis Farina

Detective Joe Fontana comes to the 27th Precinct after Lennie Briscoe retired at the end of Season 14. Fontana is partnered with Ed Green up until he gets shot in the line of duty. He is temporarily partnered with Nick Falco until Green recovers. Fontana is shown to be hard on suspects and have a short temper when he tries to get suspects to confess. We learn that Fontana retired after the end of the 16th Season.
 
 
Det. Mike Logan [S01-S05], played by Chris Noth

Detective Mike Logan was a hard-nosed, short-tempered detective working in the 27th Precinct. He was originally partnered with Sergeant Max Greevey until he was shot and killed after the 1st Season. His next partner was Sergeant Phil Cerreta until he was shot in the middle of Season 3. Although he didn't die, Cerreta was transfered to another Precinct in a desk job. Detective Lennie Briscoe was his final partner until Logan left in Season 5 after assaulting a Congressman. Logan was then transfered to Staten Island.
 
 
E.A.D.A. Benjamin Stone [Seasons 1-4], played by Michael Moriarty

E.A.D.A. Benjamin Stone was the main prosecutor in the first four seasons. He worked with A.D.A. Robinette and A.D.A. Kincaid before he was replaced by E.A.D.A. Jack McCoy.
 
 
Sgt. Max Greevey [Season 1], played by George Dzundza

Max Greevey appeared in the first season of "Law & Order". He was paired with Detective Mike Logan and was killed in the line of fire. He was replaced by Phil Cerreta.
