Episode Recap

Five year in the future, Hiro and Ando go to Isaac's loft and find articles and photos strung to the ceiling, all connected by string. Hiro hears someone behind him and turns to confront... his future self, wielding a sword. Future Hiro says they're not supposed to there and that the explosion happened despite their efforts in the past. Sylar exploded, destroying half of New York City, and changing the world. Future Hiro explains that the articles and string are his attempt to map out the events leading to the explosion. He's trying to find the precise point in time to travel back to and change the future. When he mentions Claire, Hiro says that Peter saved her. Future Hiro asks if he's killed Sylar yet since the killer lacks Claire's power to regenerate, but Hiro informs him that he hasn't killed Sylar yet. Future Hiro tells him that he needs to go back in time and kill Sylar on the day of the explosion. He attempted to do so but in his timeline Sylar had Claire's ability and was unkillable. Hiro warns his future self that he can't control his powers.

An armed team bursts into the apartment, led by the Haitian, who takes out Hiro. Future Hiro and Ando escape while Matt Parkman comes in and recognizes Hiro. Safely outside, Future Hiro explains that the Haitian and Matt work for Homeland Security and Hiro will be taken to a holding facility with other terrorists. Since they believe Hiro is his future self, they'll hold him since Future Hiro has been fighting the government. Future Hiro explains that after the explosion the world became a darker, grimmer place and they need to get Hiro back so he can go back and alter the timeline. He warns that the Haitian can negate his powers so he can't rescue his past self, so they need someone else: Peter Petrelli.

Future Hiro and Ando go to a strip bar in Las Vegas where Future Hiro informs Ando that Peter's girlfriend works there. They watch as a dancer, Jessica, comes out. Ando recognizes her as Niki, and Niki is recognized Future Hiro. She comes to their booth and isn't happy Future Hiro is there. Future Hiro tells her they need to find Peter, but she warns that Peter isn't interested in helping. He mentions they're trying to stop Sylar but she says that if he mentions that name again, she'll break his neck. He asks if she knows where Bennet is and she admits he's somewhere in Texas. They leave and Niki sits at the bar and a drink slides itself down to her: it's Peter, invisible. He asks what Future Hiro wants and Niki notes he's still trying to stop Sylar. A memorial newscast of the explosion is on the TV and as they watch, Peter notes it's the day she lost her son. She says she's trying to go over it and if he can't, he should go with Future Hiro. He say she isn't going anywhere and kisses her.

Hiro is taken to the Homeland Security holding facility where he tries to explain he's innocent. Matt goes over all the crimes that Future Hiro has committed, including murder, but Hiro insists he's not a killer. Matt reads Hiro's thoughts and confirms he believes what he says, but wonders why that's the case. Nonetheless, he's determined to get the truth from Hiro. He then calls Nathan and informs him they've caught Hiro. Nathan wonders if it's a coincidence they caught him on the anniversary of the explosion and thinks Future Hiro has something planned. Matt says that Hiro doesn't remember anything from the past five years but Nathan tells him to rip the information out of Hiro's mind.

Nathan, in the Oval Office, calls in Mohinder to inform him about Hiro. He wants Mohinder to go to New York as the only one he trusts. He asks Mohinder how close they are to eliminating the danger posed by specials and Mohinder admits that he still hasn't gotten very far. Nathan notes that the number of evolved humans is increasing and proposes to follow up with another proposal Mohinder mentioned: extinction. Mohinder disagrees, nothing he was talking about evolutionary extinction, not genocide. Mohinder notes that Nathan has a power but the President dismisses it, saying that flying is harmless. When Mohinder admits that he may never come up with a genetic solution, Nathan says it's time to come up with Plan B.

Matt continues to beat Hiro for information and Hiro wonder why he wants to hurt his fellow specials. Before it can get any further, Matt gets a call about Mohinder's arrival in New York City and tells the Haitian to watch Hiro and keep him neutralized.

Mohinder is at Isaac's apartment, examining Future Hiro's time map.

Mr. Bennet is at Primatech performing a blood test on a young boy. He proves positive for the evolution virus and Bennet has Hana give the family fake documentation and normal blood samples to use to fool any tests. Future Hiro and Ando arrive and ask for his help gathering the specials they need: D.L., Candice, and Molly Walker. Bennet insists that their plan would endanger the people he's trying to protect, but Future Hiro only wants the people he brought to Bennet. Bennet prepares to leave but Ando says that Hiro saved Claire's life in his timeline. Bennet agrees to reconsider Future Hiro's request.

Matt meets with Mohinder at Isaac's apartment and explains the purpose of the map. Matt isn't clear why Future Hiro would do the research but Mohinder notes that Future Hiro could change the past. He determines two focal points: the day of the explosion and the day he received Chandra's ashes. He remembers the latter was the day when Peter said he met a man on the subway who could freeze time. He repeats the message that Peter was given: save the cheerleader, save the world.

Claire is working at the Burnt Toast Diner, disguised as a waitress named Sandra. She watches a broadcast about President Nathan Petrelli. One customer, Andy wonders if she's interested in Nathan and she notes he's old enough to be her father. Andy talks about their engagement and their upcoming wedding reception, and she reassures him with a kiss. He then notes that a creepy guy with glasses is back watching her. Claire goes to the booth where her father is and they fake a conversation. Bennet warns that someone knows she's still alive and she's not safe. He says it's time for her to leave and tells her not to say anything to Andy. When she says she just wants a normal life, Bennet warns that it's not safe. A news broadcast shows 200 undocumented specials being rounded up under the Linderman Act, including the ones Bennet helped earlier.

Future Hiro is explaining his plan to Ando to get inside the facility. Ando is curious as to what happened to him in this timeline, but Future Hiro balks at explaining. He finally starts to explain but Matt and his Homeland security team burst in and stun Future Hiro with a taser. Matt realizes there are two Hiro's and one must have traveled through time. Suddenly Peter appears, fading in from invisibility, and telekinetically knocks aside one officer. The others draw guns but Peter freezes time and teleports Future Hiro and Ando away with him. Matt and the others come back to normal time and realize that Peter is involved.

Bennet returns to Primatech and discovers that his office has been trashed. Matt is there and says that Future Hiro and Ando escaped despite the fact Bennet betrayed them. Bennet notes that they have an arrangement: he betrays the dangerous ones and Matt looks the other way when he helps the harmless ones. Matt asks if Bennet has heard from Janice and Bennet gives him a drawing Matt's son made. However, Bennet sees Hana lying concealed behind the desk, shot through the head. Matt throws him to the floor, saying he's terminating their arrangement now that two Hiro's are involved. He reads Bennet's mind to find Claire's location and then shoots him.

Claire is at the diner with Andy and says that she wants to elope. He finally agrees and she goes to check on the customers. One of them is Matt, who addresses her by her real name.

Mohinder visits Hiro at the holding facility and asks what "Save the cheerleader meant." He has an issue of 9th Wonders! that Issac drew, but notes that they were only accurate up to the last issue. One frame shows Hiro stabbing Sylar with his katana. Mohinder wonders if Hiro is trying to change the past and Hiro admits that he's trying to save millions of lives.

Safely hidden away, Peter confirms that Ando is who he says and notes that Ando died in the explosion. Peter warns that Future Hiro became obsessed with changing history to save his friend. Niki arrives and protests them involving her, then leaves.

Mohinder returns to Isaac's loft and explains to Nathan what Hiro intends to do. Nathan is skeptical at Hiro's chance to succeed and wants a solution now. He decides that he's going to lie and say they've developed a treatment to cure the genetic anomalies. Matt returns with the news there are two Hiros and that he's found Claire. Nathan asks Mohinder to kill Hiro.

Claire goes to the Petrelli manor and Nathan meets her there. He says he's grateful that she's alive but she blames him for making the public afraid of evolved humans. He insists that fear is a natural response and that evolved people are more important. When Claire question him, he says his authority as President gives him the right to make such decisions, He has plenty of power, having met evolved persons such as Candice that helped him become President. He notes that he only needs one more power: hers. He telekinetically holds her in place and then slices her head open. "Nathan" drops his illusion to reveal that he's Sylar, disguised as the President all this time.

Future Hiro recovers from the taser stun and talks to Ando, admitting that all of his joy and happiness left him when Ando died.

Niki confronts Peter, asking why he isn't keeping his promise to let the past go. He accuses her of doing the same, going on stage as Jessica every night, but D.L., Micah, and Jessica are all gone. She says that Jessica was right and she should only look out for herself, but Peter insists she's wrong. She accuses him of leaving her but he says he'll be back once he's helped Future Hiro. She doesn't accept his answer and asks again, and Peter admits that he was the one who exploded in New York, killing her family. Nathan lied to cover up his involvement. Niki warns that if he leaves he won't be welcomed back, but Peter insists on going and tells Future Hiro it's time to fix things.

"Nathan" is attending a memorial celebration in New York and giving a speech. Future Hiro, Peter, and Ando break into the holding facility and confront the guards. Peter tells Future Hiro to leave time unfrozen so he can enjoy the fight. Future Hiro takes on the guards with his sword while Peter runs off to take on the other guards and Ando is left alone. They defeat the guards and go after the Haitian, who can block their powers.

Upstairs, a team of guards commanded by Matt are guarding the elevator. Down the hall, the Haitian is preparing Hiro for execution by injection at Mohinder's hands. On the TV, "Nathan" gives his speech about a cure for the evolved abilities.

The elevator arrives but no one is inside. Hiro tells Mohinder to stop the execution so he can go back and stop the explosion. Mohinder apologizes... and then injects the Haitian. He frees Hiro and explains that he believes Hiro is destined to stop the explosion based on the 9th Wonders! comic.

They go outside to find Future Hiro waiting for them. He prepares to kill Mohinder but Hiro convinces him that Mohinder is on their side. Peter and Ando arrive and Future Hiro says that Hiro and Ando need to go back now. When Hiro reiterates that he can't control his power, Future Hiro offers to take him back. However, Matt arrives and shoots him twice in the back. Peter telekinetically shuts the door and Matt orders his men to break it down. He then calls "Nathan" and informs him that Peter is there. "Nathan" breaks off his speech and flies off into the air, heading for the holding facility.

As Future Hiro lies dying, he gives Ando a few pages of 9th Wonders! Hiro is stunned at the death of his future self. "Nathan" reaches through the door using D.L.'s phasing ability and pulls Peter out into the hallway. He orders Matt to finish off Hiro and the others and then drops the illusion, revealing himself as Sylar. Peter charges up his fire abilities, insisting that Sylar will die for killing Nathan and what he's done since. Sylar responds by summoning his cryokinesis and says that Nathan had already turned against his own kind. The two fire bolts of energy back and forth while Ando tries to hold the door shut. Ando convinces Hiro he can get them back. Hiro concentrates, and they travel through time back to the present as the energies outside reach a peak.

Hiro looks at the comic pages, which show him killing Sylar, and notes that it's time for the hard part.
