Hiro arrives at the Burnt Toast Diner six months in the past. He orders coffee from Charlie and tells her that he's there to save her life. Sheriff Davidson interrupts them, having Charlie come over to blow out the candles on her birthday cake. She has Hiro come over and one of her co-workers, Lynette, takes the picture of the two of them together.
In New York City at the Gray & Sons clock store, Gabriel Gray is repairing a watch. As he finishes, Chandra Suresh comes in and Gabriel asks him what he wants. He notices Chandra's watch and says it's broken, even though Chandra doesn't believe it is. Gabriel listens to the watch and then determines that it's running two minutes slow, and explains he has a talent for how things should work. He repairs Chandra's watch and then realizes Chandra is there for something else. Chandra gives him a copy of his book and suggests he read it, and to call him if he has questions.

In Los Angeles, Matt Parkman is working as a patrolman and pulls over a car driven by Eden McCain. He notices she has an open bottle of booze and she admits that she stole the vehicle. He tells her to get out of the car and she refuses, telling him to go and eat a dozen donuts. Using her power of suggestion, she commands him to do it and he mindlessly drives away. As she prepares to leave she sees the Haitian in front of her car.

Jackie comes over to see Claire, and tells her that Lori Tremmel resigned from the cheerleading squad and there's an opening for Claire, offering her a cheerleading outfit. When Claire seems reluctant, Jackie threatens to tell someone else. Claire grabs the outfit and the two fight over it, until it slips and Claire falls backward and slams her hand through a cabinet's glass door. Her mother tends to the wound, while Mr. Bennet gets a call. It's Chandra, who says he needs to speak with Bennet about Claire.
Hiro tries to explain that he came from the future and she shouldn't go to work. However, when he notices it's raining outside, Charlie explains that it's April 24, and Hiro realizes he's gone back six months instead of one day. He decides to try and save her from where he is, rather then try and teleport again and end up even further away.
Niki is attending an AA meeting and says she's been sober for a year. A friend of hers, Tina, congratulates her and they talk afterward. However, Niki notices a man in the audience and they talk afterward. He says that he wants to be with her after a year away, although Niki notes it was his choice to stay away. He apologizes and says he wants to get to know his son-in-law and his grandson.

Peter is celebrating his graduation from nursing school when Nathan, their mother Angela, and Nathan's wife Heidi arrive. Nathan says that their father is proud of him for graduating, but he's meeting with Mr. Linderman in Atlantic City. Peter announces he's going to become a hospice nurse but Nathan isn't too impressed. When Heidi leaves, Nathan tells Peter that his boss in the District Attorney's office wants him to prosecute Linderman. Peter figures that their father could get in trouble because of his connections to Linderman but Nathan figures it's a chance to clean up the Petrelli family's reputation.
Gabriel comes to visit Chandra at his apartment looking for answers. Chandra asks for the chance to run some noninvasive brain tests and Gabriel agrees. Gabriel talks about he felt isolated from his family and he needed to become someone important, and Chandra tells him that he is important.
The Haitian has brought a gagged Eden to Mr. Bennet at his facility. He knows about her criminal reputation but wants her to work for him. He removes the tape and she tries to use her power on him, but the Haitian is blocking her. He tells her that for the first time, there's someone who can say no to her.

Six months in the past, Hiro tries to call Ando. Ando is out sick so Hiro ends up talking to his past self. He quickly hangs up rather than alter his personal timeline.
Tom McHenry finds Matt in his police cruiser eating donuts and notes that Matt has his detective exam in an hour. Matt snaps out of Eden's influence and says that after the exam he'll be a different man.
Hiro takes a job as a bus boy at the Burnt Toast Diner and gives Charlie a Japanese phrase book. She immediately learns several phrases from it and she talks about how she's recently gained the ability to remember everything. He notes that it will become stronger. She still doesn't believe he has any kind of power but when she turns away for a second he teleports away and gets a bouquet of flowers for her, then instantly delivers food to a table. He also says that the "Swallows will slay the Dragons."
Niki visits the gravestone of her sister Jessica Sanders, who died in 1987 at the age of 11. D.L. visits and she talks about how she misses Jessica. They talk about her father, Hal, who has money and wants to meet with her new family. D.L. agrees to have him over for dinner.
Nathan and Heidi are driving back from the party in a convertible and talking about Peter. A van pulls up behind them and tries to run them off the road. Nathan suddenly discovers he can fly and rises up out of the car, which crashes with Heidi still in it. He's unable to control his flight to rescue her, and crashes abruptly to the ground.

Peter wakes up from a dream of the crash, and gets word of the accident. He goes to the hospital where Nathan explains what happened. Peter reveals he knows what happened from the dream and Nathan says that Linderman must have had his men try to kill him because of the criminal case against him. Nathan wants Peter to help him if he takes on the case and Peter agrees. The doctor arrives to give Nathan the bad news about Heidi.
Hiro shows Charlie a Japanese newspaper talking about the Swallows beating the Dragons in Japanese baseball, to prove his earlier prediction. Charlie can now flawlessly read the paper. She still doesn't believe him, however, and he asks her about origami. She's read about it and remembers how if someone can fold a thousand cranes then they'll be granted one wish. Hiro concentrates and suddenly a thousand paper cranes hanging from the ceiling surround Charlie. He gives her ticket to Japan and asks her to go with him.
At Chandra's apartment, the scientist's tests seemingly show nothing. They talk about the nature of an "evolutionary imperative," and how it keeps Gabriel from seeking out his destiny. Chandra wonders if he was wrong about Gabriel having any powers, and Gabriel asks him not to give up on him. Gabriel goes through several of Chandra's folders, including one about a man named Brian Davis that Chandra believes possesses telekinesis. Gabriel wonders if Chandra will abandon Brian if his tests prove negative, and Chandra tells him to get out. As he leaves, Gabriel looks at a piece of paper he stole, with Brian's address on it. As he departs, Mr. Bennet arrives and goes inside.
Hal gives Micah a laptop as a gift and goes to play with it. Niki talks about how they want to put Micah into a private school and Hal figures they're asking him for money. He agrees and says he's surprised they're letting him get involved in their lives after what he did. He goes to check on Micah and finds the boy has partially disassembled the laptop. He yells at Micah, and Niki and D.L. yell at him. Hal starts to leave but offers Niki a check as an apology for what he did. However, she doesn't remember what he did, surprising him. He goes and Niki glances at a mirror… where Jessica appears.
Bennet looks at Chandra's map and wonders how Claire's genetic abnormality will affect her. They talk about Chandra's daughter Shanti and the fact her similar anomaly led him to conduct research on the phenomena. Chandra asks to meet with Claire but Bennet says that could be a problem and only agrees to think about it.

Jessica comes to visit Hal, telling him that she could never forget. She says she's Jessica, not Niki, and that Hal used to beat Jessica until she died. Hal apologizes and says it was an accident, but Jessica says that he needs to apologize to her, not Niki. Hal says that she needs help and Jessica stuff the check in his mouth, tells him to go away, and leaves.

Mr. Bennet talks to Claire as she practices cheerleading routines and gives her a teddy bear as a present. As they talk about whether she is a bad person or not for wanting to be a cheerleader, he looks at her hand… that has fully healed.
Matt comes home to tell his wife Janice that he failed the exam. He couldn't pass due to his dyslexia, which he can't mention to his superiors without hurting his career. He wonders how she can still love him and then hears her thoughts that she thinks he's her hero. She tells him out loud that he's everything she could want, but he's still despondent over the fact he's stuck as a traffic cop.
Peter is preparing to go to the deposition when Nathan arrives and tells him that their father is dead, supposedly of a heart attack and there will be no deposition. He assures Peter that at least their father didn't know they were going to betray him.
Hiro invites Charlie to a film festival but she's reluctant. When he wonders what's the matter, she says that she has a blood clot in her brain that is killing her. Hiro is shocked, and says he came back to try and save her. She says that she did, that she has felt really alive since she met him. They kiss, and then Hiro snaps back to the present on top of his father's office building in Tokyo. He tries to teleport back to Charlie but can't.
Gabriel is working at his clock shop when Brian Davis comes in. Gabriel invited him but doesn't want to give his real name. Looking around, he sees a Sylar-brand watch and introduces himself as Gabriel Sylar. Brian demonstrates his powers, but then asks Gabriel to make it go away: he's scared of his abilities. Gabriel looks at him and then says he sees how Brian is "broken." He grabs a paperweight and says that he has an "evolutionary imperative," then smashes Brian's skull in.

Mr. Bennet talks to Eden, saying she can take his opportunity and start over, or they can leave her where she was. He tells her that he wants her to get Claire's name off of Chandra's list.
Gabriel visits Chandra at his apartment and demonstrates that he has telekinetic abilities. Gabriel apologizes for his outburst the other day and says that now he wants to help others find out how important they are as well, and they can do it together.

Hiro returns to the Burnt Toast Diner in the present and meets with Ando. Ando says that his power wasn't enough to save Charlie and that he can't change the past. He goes to Charlie's makeshift memorial and places an origami crane on it.
