Hiro's quest to right his wrongs and failures leads him to what he considers his biggest failure, his effort to save the love of his life, Charlie. Doing so without severely distorting the flow of events, however, is far from easy--and complicated by the manipulations of Samuel, whose own agenda is somewhat darker and more self-serving. Meanwhile, Noah in the past deals with his partner from Primatech and his family issues.

Episode Notes |
| |
Noah's partner, Lauren Gilmore, played by Elizabeth Rohm, was never seen in the first season. Using the standard pattern of Primatech, "one of us, one of them", she should/must be a metahuman, though there is never any indication of her power in this episode, or even a suggestion of it. | Robert Knepper is promoted to show star status in the opening credits as of this episode. |

Episode Quotes |
| |
Samuel: My family is shrinking and our graveyard is getting bigger. | Lydia: Her name is Charlie. Hmm. There's a problem. She's dead. Three years ago.
Samuel: That's not a problem. That's an... opportunity. | Lauren Gilmore: I mean, I wish I could tell my mom that I missed my nephew's bar mitzvah because I was busy bagging a guy who can shoot fire out of his nose, but I can't.
Noah: So what'd you tell her?
Lauren Gilmore: PMS.
Noah: I don't think that would work for me. | Hiro: I'm here to save Charlie.
Samuel: And why would you be doing something like that?
Hiro: You told me I could right the wrongs of my life by stepping on the right butterflies. This is the biggest. It's Mothra. | Claire: I mean, do you like it? Do you love it, selling paper?
Noah: Yeah, I like it a lot.
Claire: I just.. I'm sorry, I can't imagine you being in high school, and saying, "When I grow up, I want to sell paper." | Hiro: Yes, I will tell you how you die. You die alone. I'm sorry.
Sylar: What the hell is that supposed to mean?
Hiro: It means that you will collect a lot of powers. You will kill many people. You will become strong. The strongest of them all. But in the end, it won't make any difference. We all gather to stop you. You're alone. No one will mourn your death. No one will shed a tear. No one. I wish I could change fate, but you must go on your path. | Samuel: I've got my own butterflies that need crushing. |

Cultural References |
| |
Hiro: It's Mothra.
Mothra is a daikaiju -- a fictional hero/monster of the Japanese "Godzilla" genre most associated with Toho tokusatsu films. Originally débuting in the 1961 film Mothra, she has appeared in many films, usually battling Godzilla and other monsters in a beneficent defense of humanity. She has died/been killed and been reborn many times, including during several of her battles with Godzilla. She is the most popular of the daikaiju among Japanese females, and, unlike the other daikaiju, has never been played by an actor in a costume, but always been a mechanical marionette operated by wires. | Hiro: The MJ to my Spidey.
Hiro is talking about Mary Jane "MJ" Watson and Peter Parker, the Amazing-Spider-Man, who have a romantic relationship (and were married in the comic books, at least for a while) in Marvel Comics. | Past-Hiro: The Marle to my Crono!
Marle and Crono are two of the main characters in the video game Chrono Trigger. Marle is the princess of Guardia, and Crono is a sword-wielding villager. The two fall in love and are eventually married. | Noah: "Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour draws on apace; four happy days bring in another moo:; but, o, methinks, how slow this old moon wanes! She lingers my desires..."
As noted, Noah quotes from Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream. | Noah: "The course of true love never did run smooth."
Again referencing A Midsummer's Night Dream, Act 1, scene 1, lines 132-140, a line of dialogue spoken by Lysander to his lover Hermia. |
