Jess buys a used car from Gypsy, and Luke worries where Jess got that kind of money. Luke is amused when he finally gets Jess to admit that he has a part-time job at Wal-Mart. Lane takes it as a personal affront that Jess would get his own car after totaling Rory's. Rory gets an invitation to Sherry's baby shower, and admits to Lorelai that she's been talking to Christopher a bit on the phone. Lorelai drives Rory to the shower and gets talked into attending as well by Sherry. Sherry drives Lorelai nuts with her perfection and her planning and her gushing about how incredible Christopher has been through everything. Lorelai fumes on the way home with Rory and deviled eggs that they were forced to take with them. Rory suggests they throw the deviled eggs at Jess's car for catharsis. It works. The town loner gets permission from the town church to stage a protest, but when his banner falls the wrong way and then rips, no one can figure out what he's protesting.

Episode Quotes

(About his car)
Jess: You mean it didn't come with a magic never empty tank?

Lorelai: Hey, what do you know about this town loner guy?
Luke: Same as everyone. Just kinda skulks around with that backpack. Never smiles.
Lorelai: Does he also make cheeseburgers and secretly harbor a desire to wear a backwards baseball cap?

Lorelai: I just want to rearrange her whole house.
Rory: You can't do that.
Lorelai: Please, just let me mess up her bed. You make a distraction like setting a fire, and I'll go up and uncolor coordinate her sheets.
Rory: I think the fire would be the thing that she would remember.

Jess: I go to a place that gives me money.
Luke: For what?
Jess: For my services.
Luke: What services? What place? Jess, are you a gigolo?

Rory: What should our S.O.S. signal be?
Lorelai: How about 'S.O.S.'?
Rory: Perfect.

Lorelai: She made a very persuasive argument that if we left at six, there’d be an extra hour of sitting in traffic, so by leaving at seven we’d get home at the same time as leaving at six.
Rory: She’s very up on traffic flow and rush hour and all that.
Lorelai: She’s Rand McNally.
Rory: She should do traffic reports on the radio.
Lorelai: "Hi, this is Sherry Tinsdale. Looks like there’s a tie-up on the boulevard. They appear to be moving every building in Harvard University so now it’s just one point three miles from my house. Nice job, guys."
Rory: You’re awful.
Lorelai: "Oh, and lots of cars stopped at a blue light on Garvey Avenue. Why a blue light? Well, ‘cause blue’s the new red."

Lorelai: This is a stack of identical catalogs mailed to Lorelai Gilmore, Rory Gilmore, Lorelai Rory Gilmore, Lorelai V Gilmore, Lorelai Victoria Gilmore, Lorelai Gilmo, Lorelai Gil and Squeegy Beckinheim.
Rory: How'd that get in there?
Lorelai: I once told the store that my name was Squeegy Beckinheim just to see how many catalogs they'd sell my name to. And apparently, my name is to catalog companies what Brooke Shield's picture is to Chinese Restaurants.
Rory: How many?
Lorelai: 10.
Rory: Wow.

Episode Goofs

At the baby shower when Lorelai and Sherry are talking, the women begin to shoot off poppers. The shot shows two women standing up, away from the couch, popping them. In the next shot, the woman in the white sweater is pops a popper and when the shot cuts back to her, she is on the couch.

When Jess sees his car after the egging, there are way more eggs on the car than the amount that Lorelai and Rory threw.

Cultural References

Luke: Did you make sure Andrew Jackson was on the bills, not Alfred E. Newman or someone?

Alfred E. Newman is the mascot of MAD magazine.

Kirk: All I have is a Jan and Dean record.

Jan and Dean were a musical duo who recorded several car songs including "Little Old Lady from Pasadena" and "Little Deuce Coupe".

Lorelai: They're identical. Two syllables, repeating consonants. Rory. G.G.
Rory: Oprah. Uma.

Rory is referencing David Letterman's joke from the 1995 Academy Awards show about Oprah Winfrey and Uma Thurman.
