Episode discussion for: 01x06 | Scary Monsters and Super Creeps (Oct 29, 2009)
In case anyone wants to know more about the double-slit experiment and the Schrodingers cat paradox mentioned by Simon on the train here are some links to look at. Both are reality changing experiments.
The Double Slit Experiment shows us that we create reality just by observing it. SEE:
http://www.doubleslitexperiment.com/
In over-simplified terms, the act of opening the box to check on the cat determines whether the cat is alive or dead. SEE:
http://quantumphysics.suite101.com/article.cfm/schroedingers_cat_paradox
Boggles the mind.

Well, Simon Costa and Lloyd Simcoe are responsible for the blackout that killed 20 million people; but are they also responsible for the flashforward? Are they the same event? I think it was time travel experiment.
As far as Agent Hawks having kids goes "almost impossible" isn't the same as impossible. Or is she just an example of the future changing?
What's up with the kangaroo?
This show is very esoteric and it's tiresome.
I'm deciding on watching, or not, at the last minute and could go either way - still. |

The Double Slit experiment and Schrödinger's cat (the proper spelling of "Schrödinger" btw):
The problem here is the notion that the observer is "creating" the reality. Nominally the term is correct, but there are subtle mental implications which are suggested by "creating" -- the term "creating" suggests that the "creator" has control over the reality, can somehow "make" it one way or another, which is absolutely not the truth.
The observer's role is limited, as far as current science indicates, to forcing the object in question (be it the "wavicle" of the double slit or Schrödinger's tabby) out of its quantum flux and into one of its options.
There's nothing the viewer can do to cause it to go to a specific state from the list of its optional states.
You don't get to pick which path the quantum object settles onto.
For all we know, our timewise linear consciousness bifurcates at each option and follows, without any awareness of the other choices, each of the options that occurs. There is a lot of speculation on this, mind you, but as yet no one has come up with a valid test for it.
The SF term used most often is "Multiverse", and the realm you're getting into is as much philosophy as it is physics, because, for the most part, the availability of tests to prove or disprove theories is pretty limited, which makes it no longer "science".
It may well be that God (Allah, Buddha, whatever) is the observer outside the timewise dimensions who perceives all the bifurcations as they are, and thus "knows all" because He(She) sees all the options laid out before them. (And no, don't ask me what "supertime" they perceive things in terms of. That's comprehensible as a question but so far outside of human experience and comprehension that it may well be utterly meaningless as a whole concept (Physicist Wolfgang Pauli on a colleague's paper: "This isn't right. It's not even wrong.") |

You know, Grey's Anatomy, which immediately follows Flashforward right now, might be more your speed, since you clearly don't want to have aaaaanything you don't already compleeeeeeeetely understand left at the end of any episode.
I'm somewhat teasing, mind you -- ha ha only serious -- I expect there to be wide swathes of things I don't know about the story at the end of each show... I even expect episodes which provide as many, or even more, questions as/than they answer. It's that type of show. You don't get to shut off your brain and vege when watching it. That's not its intention. I think it's fun to speculate on what is really going on, to put things together and see if they fit with other things, and to watch for evidence of this or that speculation being correct.
It's a puzzle, and I don't have all the pieces. I'm down with that, for now. YMMV.

[pasted over from ep07 thread]
That highlander man bloke needs a right good slap for not just telling his wifey about his FF right at the very start, I knew that decision would come to kick him in the ass, what a dink. But as for the blue hands, getting a bit Fireflyish. IIRC Joss never decided exactly what they meant, hopefully the FF ptb have a logical reason, other than the badies all being Smurfies.
So the Cat is both alive & dead at the same time ?! ..........
The aliveness of the Cat is unknown
As for what caused the FF - weeeeelll, maybe getting Evangeline Lilly to agree to marry him cause the Universe to give a massive "WFT, you lucky Bstd" and everything went all hookie. |

Debatable. I prefer the notion that it is neither. You can make philosophical arguments regarding that notion, however.
The role of the observer in establishing the actual state is the primary mental twist you have to wrap your head around.
The suggestion is that the universe doesn't exist, in the sense we think of at least, except when we (or some conscious being) are there looking at it.
Until and except in that context, it's in a state of quantum fuzz, where things have happened but nominally might have gone any which way, and it's the watcher who places the facts/results into position.
It suggests that we should nominally be able to choose which of those outcomes we wish, as well as a related question, does our awareness fracture/bifurcate with each quantum event? What makes the path we perceive "the right" one?
Which leads us to...
If a tree fall in the forest, does Helen Keller make a sound?

Not sure I get anything there that's not an intentional sexual euphemism.
Ooooh, look, Geoffrey, he's got a scary monster!!!
|
You're smurfing right
And as for that cat -> methinks he's alive in the box just waiting for it to be openned - at which point he'll leap out and scratch the smurf out of the scientist for putting him in the smurfing box in the first damn place. |
