Episode Notes

The doll Peter makes says "Any of you kids want to see a dead body." But on Adult Swim it says "Any of you kids want to score some pot?"

This is the first appearence of Peters father, Francis, until Season 4's episode "The Father, The Son, and the Holy Fonz". Although, he is seen in "Perfect Castaway", but he does not speak.

We find out there is alot of tension between Lois and Francis, because of Lois' religion.

Episode Quotes

Peter: We all love the bible in this house.
Francis: Really? What's your favorite book of the bible?
Peter: Umm... the one where Jesus swallows the puzzle piece, and the man in a big yellow hat has to take him to the hospital.

Peter: Whew, I'm glad we got that worked out.
(knock at the door)
Peter's mom: Peter, guess who needs a place to stay?
Brian: Oh god, No!
Peter: Quick everyone, into the pod!

Peter: My dad worked at that factory for sixty years. That's almost eighty years.

Lois: He just got up and left? Where would he go?
Peter: I don't know. I just asked him to buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks.
Brian: I don't care if he ever comes back.
(pause)
Brian: I wasn't being cute, I really hope he's dead.

Peter: Sometimes it's appropriate to swear
(Peter is in court)
Bailiff: Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help you god?
Peter: I do........you bastard.

Peter: Hey, what are you doing here?
Superman: I killed a hooker. She made a crack about me being faster than a speeding bullet so I ripped her in half like a phonebook.

Stewie: You know, I rather like this God fellow. Very theatrical, you know. Pestilence here, a plague there. Omnipotence ... gotta get me some of that.

Grandpa Griffin: You're a good woman, Lois. Perhaps you won't burn in hell after all. Maybe you'll just go to purgatory with all the unbaptized babies.
Peter: There you go, Lois, you love kids.

Stewie: (reading the Bible) My, my. What a thumping good read! Lions eating Christians, people nailing each other to two-by-fours. I say, you won't find that in Winnie the Pooh.

Lois: Kids, your grandfather's ears are not gross and they are certainly not an enchanted forest.

Peter: Dad, to be honest, I don't like you either. Aw, jeez, that's a terrible thing to say. I guess I am going to hell, huh.
The Pope: Peter, the good lord said to honor thy father. He never said anything about liking him.

Episode Goofs

Lois brings in a bowl of popcorn for the Pope in the living room, and a few seconds later it dissapears.

Stewie is on Meg's lap when the Pope is in the living room, but when they are examined one by one, Stewie is on the other side of the couch from Meg.

There are two pictures of the Griffin kids on the wall before Peter shouts "To the Popemobile!". In the first shot we see Stewie's picture is to the right side of Chris' and Meg's pictures, but then in the next shot it is to the left.

Throughout the entire episode, the kitchen door opens to the left instead of the right like usual.

Peter's father tells Lois "Maybe you won't go to Hell after all. Maybe you'll just be sent to Purgatory with all the unbaptized babies." Unbaptized babies are sent to Limbo, not Purgatory, a hardcore Catholic like Francis would know that.

During the family's ride home w/ Francis they are clearly driving through a residential neighborhood but when Peter says “It's no bother, is it Lois”, the outside scenery is that of (presumably) downtown Quahog & then switches back to residential.

When the show returns from the commercial break after Francis fires Peter, in the exterior shot of the Griffin house, the Swanson's driveway is missing.

The Bible Stewie is reading has “Holy Bible” written in gold on the cover but when Lois puts the bowl of oatmeal down in front of him and says to Peter “How can you let him talk to you like that”, the cover reads “The Holy Bible” on a golden crest.
It returns to the normal gold letters when Stewie says the God is “so deliciously evil”.

Lois places the bowl of oatmeal in front of Stewie twice. Once when she says to Peter “How can you let him talk to you like that”, and the second when she takes the Bible away from him.

Cultural References

The opening scene is a parody of the “got milk?” commercials

Brian: “Can you guys do that fluttery thing like when the Brady kids come down the stairs”

The Brady Kids from the classic sitcom The Brady Bunch (1969-1974).
The character “Cindy Brady” is the only one of the kids who has lines.

Brian: “Like when God told Abraham to kill Isaac”

Instead of the Bible story, God has apparently told Abraham Lincoln to kill Isaac Washington the bartender from the TV show “The Love Boat” (1977-1986)

Peter: “The one where the Jesus swallows the puzzle piece, and the man in the yellow hat has to take him to the hospital”

A reference to the classic series of children's books, “Curious George”, first published in 1941 by by Margaret & H. A. Rey

Brian & Lois watch the classic sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-1966) starring Dick Van Dyke & Mary Tyler Moore, with an extended opening in which Dick gets severally injured after he falls over the footstool.

Peter: “I just asked him to buy me some peanuts and cracker jack”
Brian: “I don't care if he ever gets back... I wasn't being cute I really hope he's dead”

The lines “Buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks. I don't care if I ever get back” is a reference to the song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” by Jack Norworth

Peter: “It even worked for Rosie O'Donnell and his father in A League of Their Own”

(Obvious) Reference to the 1992 Penny Marshall movie “A League of Their Own” which starred Rosie O'Donnell

Peter: “We could start our own father-son business”

Peter's vision of a junk business he and Francis can start is actually a parody of the tv sitcom Sanford & Son (1972-1977) that starred Redd Foxx & Demond Wilson, With Francis playing “Fred G. Sanford” (Foxx) & Peter playing “Lamont” (Wilson).
The scene includes Fred's catch phrase “give you a knuclke samich'”

Zeek the Moody Drifter Doll: “You want to see a dead body”

This may be a reference to the 1986 movie “Stand By Me” in which Jerry O'Connell's character Vern says the same line to his friends.

Stewie: “I say you don't find that in Winnie the Pooh”

Stewie compares the Bible to the classic children's book by A. A. Milne, “Winnie-the-Pooh”, first published in 1926

Luke: “Takin' it off there Boss”
Guard: “Takin' it off there Luke”
Dragline: “Wipin' it off there Boss”
Guard: “Wiping it off there Dragline”
Luke: “Wavin' at the Pope there Boss”
Guard: “Wave at the Pope there Luke”

The chain gang working on the side of the road as the Pope passes is a reference to the 1967 Paul Newman film “Cool Hand Luke”, with the characters “Luke” (Newman) and “Dragline” (George Kennedy) being seen.

Lois: “Don't you think there someone else you should talk to?”
Peter: “There sure is.”

Peter talks to the Scarecrow & Tin Man from 1933's “The Wizard of Oz”

Peter: “...and Kristy McNichol, come back to TV. We miss you”

Kristy McNichol may be best remembered for her role as “Barbara Weston” on the sitcom “Empty Nest” (1988-1995).
She's had a few roles after “Empty Nest” ended but in 1998, she retired from acting.

Peter: “To the Popemobile!”

Peter's quote, the scene transition with the Pope's hat, the exit from the cave and music are all references to the “Batman” TV series (1966-1968)

When Peter brings the Pope to the factory the employees are assembling large versions of the late 90's fad toy, the “Furby”

Peter: “Quick everyone, into the pod!”

The pod the family escapes in is a reference to “Star Wars: A New Hope”.
The characters “C3PO” & “R2D2” escape in the same manner.
