The Borad: The ruler of Karfel is the Borad - a soft-spoken old man who appears only on screens, apparently as a security measure. In fact, this is an android. The real Borad is a mutated scientist, Magellan, who was fused with a reptilian Morlox when an experiment involving Mustakozene-80 and a Morlox creature went wrong and he and the creature underwent spontaneous tissue amalgamation. The Borad is now a combined mutant with greater strength, intellect and longevity. He intends to use Peri to repeat the experiment and create a consort for himself.
On his previous visit, the Doctor reported Magellan to Karfel's "Inner Sanctum" for unethical experimentation on the Morlox. The Borad recognises the TARDIS - he knows that the Doctor is a Time Lord and that he can regenerate.
Power is supplied to the Borad through two amulets - one with a mirror set in it, the other black. This black amulet has a concealed, shielded microphone built into it. The Borad monitors everything happening in his citadel, and has banned all mirrors other than the one in his amulet.
He uses a time acceleration beam to age those who betray him - such as Renis and Tekker - to death. Others he has thrown into the Timelash. His time web is a weapon that can disintegrate the dealed door to the Inner Sanctum.
The Borad has also experimented with cloning - the Borad the Doctor ages to death is merely one of these clones. The 'real' Borad falls into the Timelash and is taken back to twelth-century Scotland, close to Loch Ness.
| The Timelash: The Timelash is the pyramid-shaped entrance to a Kontron tunnel - a time corridor in space - leading to Earth in AD1179.
The Doctor is able to climb inside the Timelash and retrive Kontron crystals. He uses one crystal to create a ten-second time break - projecting a past image of himself to confuse the Borad. The crystal also absorbs the Borad's time acceleration beam, and reflects it back at him after a ten-second delay, ageing him to death. The Doctor destroys the Timelash by throwing Kontron crystals back into it.
| Karfel: Karfel is on the brink of war with its former ally Bandril, having reneged on a treaty to supply grain to the planet. The Bandrils are threatening to launch a Bendalypse warhead at Karfel - this would destroy anything with a central nervous system but leave buildings intact. Only the Morlox and the Borad would survive.
The guard androids used on Karfel are identical, stylised humanoids that speak in sing-song voices. The Doctor confuses an android by waving a mirro at it - possibly it is priortiy-programmed to confiscate the mirror.
karfel is ruled by a Council led by the Maylin, who is merely a figurehead answering to the Borad. After the Borad kills Renis for betraying him, Tekker becomes the new Maylin. Mykros becomes Maylin at the end of story. The security forces are the guardoliers.
