Episode Quotes

The Captain: Moons of madness, why am I encumbered with incompetents?

The Doctor: The others’ll be easy. Piece of cake.
K9: Piece of cake, Master?
The Doctor: Um-hum.
K9: Piece of cake. Radial segment of baked confection. Coefficient of relevance to the Key of Time: zero.
The Doctor: That’s what I said, K9. Piece of cake.

The Doctor: What are you reading?
Romana: Oh, just familiarizing myself with the technical details of this capsule.
The Doctor: “Capsule”? What kind of word is that? If you mean “TARDIS,” why don’t you say “TARDIS”?
Romana: The Type 40 capsule wasn’t on the main syllabus, you see.
The Doctor: Yes, I don’t know what the Academy’s coming to these days.
Romana: Veteran and Vintage Vehicle wasn’t on the syllabus. I preferred something more interesting.
The Doctor: Really, like what?
Romana: The life cycle of the Gallifreyan Flutterwing.
The Doctor: Now you’re being frivolous.
Romana: I wouldn’t dream of it.

The Doctor: Listen, have you any idea how long I’ve been operating this TARDIS?
Romana: Five hundred and twenty-three years.
The Doctor: Right! Is it really that long? My, how time flies.
Romana: Hasn’t it?

Romana: (reading the TARDIS manual) It says here, "on any capsule, it will be found impossible to effect a smooth materialization without first activating the multi-loop stabilizer."
The Doctor: Oh. Absolute rubbish. (rips out the page) Now I'll show you a really smooth landing without a multi-loop anything. Now watch this. Calufrax, here we come! (the TARDIS starts to vibrate)

The Doctor: I am perfectly capable of admitting when I’m wrong.
Romana: Oh.
The Doctor: Yes. Only this time I wasn’t.

Kimus: It is a mistake to ask too many questions.
Mula: That’s your answer to everything, isn’t it?
Kimus: I have no need for answers. For all I ask is a quiet life.

K9: Attention. Life form approaching?
Romana: What?
The Doctor: It’s all right. It just means someone’s coming.
Romana: I know what it means.

The Doctor: You’re not doing very, K9
K9: Master?
The Doctor: No.
K9: Suggestion, master.
The Doctor: What?
K9: Suggest you allow mistress to make contact.
The Doctor: Nonsense. Making contact with an alien race is a mess of skill and delicate operation. It calls for tact and experience. What would she know about it?
Romana: Excuse me…?
K9: She is prettier than you, Master?
The Doctor: Is she? What’s that got to do with it?

The Doctor: Where’d you get those jelly babies?
Romana: Same place you do.
The Doctor: Where?
Romana: Your pocket.

Kimus: Thank you, oh merciful Captain, for so kindly having Mula's father shot down in the street like a dog.

(approaching a man on the street)
The Doctor: Excuse me? Have you seen Calufrax? It’s a sort of planet, about 14,000 kilometers across, oblate sphere…

Guard: (taking Romana's telescope) This is a forbidden object.
Romana: Why?
Guard: That is a forbidden question. You are a stranger?
Romana: Well, yes.
Guard: Strangers are forbidden.
Romana: I did come with the Doctor.
Guard: Who is...?
Romana: Ah, now don't tell me. Doctors are forbidden, as well.
