Sunday's latest "Dexter" hit a series-high for Showtime.

The show's fifth episode of the season was seen by 1.7 million viewers in its 9 p.m. premiere. "Dexter" has been on par or climbing each week since its premiere. This is the most-watched episode of a Showtime series since the network switched to its current measurement system in '04.

With John Lithgow on board to play a serial killer, the show has been pretty strong this season and Jennifer Carpenter's self-loathing breakdown on Sunday was a heartbreaking perfect Emmy clip (though the show's fast-forward-worthy workplace romance subplot is dullsville -- this series always struggles to make Dex's co-workers interesting).

The Dexter way of each series being a complete story seems to work wonders in allowing new viewers to jump on board with ease.
