Seth Bullock and Sol Star travel to a mining camp called “Deadwood”. The not-yet town is in Indian Territory, so there is no legal government. Al Swearengen controls the business and the land when they arrive. While there is no law, and former lawman Bullock’s only intent is to open a hardware store, he finds it hard to ignore injustice, as does his new acquaintance and fellow retired lawman Wild Bill Hickok. Bullock and Star also befriend an eccentric preacher.

Episode Quotes

Jack McCall: Should we shake hands or something, relieve the atmosphere. I mean how stupid do you think I am?
Wild Bill Hickok: I don't know, I just met you.

Ellsworth: God damn it, Swearengen, I don’t trust you as far as I can throw you, but I enjoy the way you lie.
Al: Thank you, my good man.
Ellsworth: You’re welcome, you connivin’ heavy thumbed motherfucker.

Seth: Let’s go.
Sol: Comin’ out with your fly down might strike the wrong note.

Seth: We got chamber pots for sale here. And if you don’t know what one of those is, the man living next to you will appreciate your finding out.

E.B. Farnum: Am I too late?
Tim Driscoll: No, but you’re too fucking late!

Calamity Jane: I don’t drink where I’m the only fuckin’ one with BALLS!

Ellsworth: (proposing a toast, while drinking with Trixie) Fuck us all anyway for the limber dick cocksuckers we are.

Seth Bullock: Get down off of your horse, or face the consequences.
(Ned Mason reaches for his gun, both Seth and Bill draw, a gun fires, Ned dies with instantly shot through the eye)
Wild Bill Hickok: That you or me, Montana?
Seth Bullock: My money’d be on you.

Seth Bullock: Any more gun play gets answered. You call the law in Sampson, you don't get to call it off just cause you're liquored up and popular on payday.

E.B. Farnum: (to Wild Bill Hickok) Separate rooms, I'll arrange that by tomorrow, but today I can't fix it,... unless you kill a guest.

Sol Star: (offering business advice to Bullock) Comin' out with your fly down might strike the wrong note.
