Cultural References

Title: Grissom's Divine Comedy

Dante's The Divine Comedy is considered the central epic poem of Italian literature, and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. Many modern Western cultural perceptions of Hell are actually derived more from this work than from Biblical Scripture, including the "Circles of Hell". Also, the central character is the Roman poet Virgil, whose name bears a vague resemblance to Gil Grissom's, since "Gil" is a common contraction for "Virgil" (though this may not be a direct contraction -- Gil may be his full name, just as Beth, a common contraction for Elizabeth, has become a full name in itself).
