Booth and Brennan look into the apparent suicide of a protester in Arlington National Cemetery. But Brennan and her team determine that the cause of death is murder not suicide and that the victim is a veteran of the war in Iraq not a protester as originally assumed. Further clues point to a military cover-up and the investigation leads Booth to have to relive his own career as a military sniper.

Episode Notes

This episode is like a Law & Order "Ripped from the Headlines" episode. This episode mirrors loosely the story of Pat Tillman, a safety for the Arizona Cardinals, who turned way from the riches of the NFL and answered his patriotic call and enlisted into the army and became a Ranger. Pat Tillman died in a skirmish in Afghanistan.

Booth was a compulsive gamber upon returning from service and is now in recovery.

Episode Quotes

(Speaking of the United States recent terrorism policy.)
Dr. Goodman: So you don't think we should stand up to tyrants?
Hodgins: Sure, I've been waiting for the press to do that for three years now.
Angela: I can't believe you took the bait.
Dr. Goodman: Yeah, me neither.

Hodgins: Big boys telling you to sweep this one under the rug?
Booth: Just can the left wing conspiracies, Hodgins. This is probably one of your nut-ball friends here on the table.

(To a troubled Booth.)
Temperance: I'm your partner. Let me be your partner.

Temperance: Now you're a mind reader?
Booth: Maybe,...want me to guess your weight?
Temperance: You do and you could lose a tooth.

Angela: You want to make the world a better place, Jack? Try shutting your yap long enough to hear something other than the sound or your own voice.

(To Bones about Booth.)
Angela: I'm talking about being there for him,...knowing when a... a simple touch is enough.

Booth: I don't know what you're fighting for, Fuller, but it sure ass hell wasn't my country.

Cultural References

Booth: What was that, the Duke? That was horrible. That was like Jerry Lewis.

The Duke is the nickname of the Oscar winning actor, John Wayne, who was instrumental in the film industry from the 40's and into the 70's. he appeared in more than 165 films. He had an unforgettable swagger about him that resonated into how he talked. He is one of the most impersonated persons of all time.

Jerry Lewis was also an actor that in his hey day was renowned for his odd ball and colorful characters, most times that character was a bit dim witted.

Booth in telling of his story in Kosovo, mentions a General Radik, who is mass murderer, as the one he kills. In the film, Air Force One, there is a General Radek (spelled slightly different, but pronounced the same) who is Russian mass murderer. A connection to the film couldn't immediately be found, so this may be a coincidence, though unlikely.
