The Billboard Music Awards have been held annually since 1990, and they honor the most popular artist, single, and album in each genre of music. Popularity is determined by Billboard magazine's year-end music charts. Additionally, a Billboard Century Award, Billboard's highest honor for creative achievement, is also given to one artist per year.
