A respected former colleague and mentor of Dr. Franklin turns up at the station with a proposition. He has found some unique artifacts which Franklin's skills and equipment can help to understand and teach about living machines, the one area human science has yet to get a handle on. They recognize the Vorlons have this technology, and believe the Minbari have some understanding of it, but humans have never gotten a chance to examine it up close. Unfortunately, what they have found is a weapons technology, which is designed to take over a living host and turn it into a protector -- a killing machine designed to defend its creators. Unfortunately, what it protects no longer exists, but humans are perceived as a threat, regardless. If it is not stopped, it will destroy Babylon 5 and all the life forms on it.
In addition, for the second anniversary of Babylon 5's operation, Sinclair is scheduled to be interviewed by Interstellar Network News. His previous experiences with interviews have left him somewhat gunshy, and so his interviewer is having a hard time pinning him down for the actual screen time.

Episode Quotes |

Garibaldi: Have you ever tried one of these? (picks up some odd looking thing from a merchant)
Mary Ann Cramer: What is it?
Garibaldi: I'm not sure, according the translator, it's either an aphrodisiac or a floor wax. Can't decide if it's worth the risk or not. | Mary Ann Cramer: You know, if this interview hadn't been set up weeks ago by Earthforce public relations, I'd swear that Cmdr Sinclair did not want to be interviewed by Interstellar Network News...
Garibaldi: I can't imagine that.
Mary Ann Cramer: This is supposed to be an event. This is the second anniversary of Babylon 5 going online. We took a poll when this station first opened and seventy five percent of INN viewers said that this place wouldn't even last five minutes! Lloyd's of London put the odds of this station surviving even one year at 500 to 1. Against! | Garibaldi: It'll be fun, so why are you ducking her?
Sinclair: The last time I gave an interview, they told me to just relax, and say what I really felt. Ten minutes after the broadcast I got transferred to an outpost so far off the star maps you couldn't find it with a hunting dog and a Ouija board.
Garibaldi: Don't sweat it. Just be the charming, effervescent Commander we've all come to know and love. What's the worst that can happen? They fire you, ship you off to the rim, and I get promoted to Commander. I don't see a problem here.
Sinclair: How sharper than a serpent's tooth... | (The interviewer wants to know what is going on, Sinclair has just blown her off and walked away)
Mary Ann Cramer: Commander! (moving after him)
Ivanova: (Interceding) Don't. You're too young to experience that much pain. | Franklin: The people can be fooled, so to prevent them from being confused by any misleading instructions from the enemy they hard-wired the machine half of the weapons not to respond to anyone who wasn't pure Acara. Just one problem, Commander, how do you define a "pure" Acara or a "pure" human? No one is "pure". No one. | Tulah: Dead! A thousand years, dead!
Sinclair: There's your pure world! Your perfect world!
Tulah: We did this!
Sinclair: Yes!
Tulah: No!
Sinclair: Damn you, look at it. You and the rest. You forgot the first rule of the fanatic! When you become obsessed with the enemy, you become the enemy! | Mary Ann Cramer: So, Commander -- after all you've just gone through... I have to ask you the same question a lot of people back home are asking about space these days. Is it worth it? Should we just pull back? Forget the whole thing as a bad idea? And take care of our own problems... at home?
Sinclair: No. We have to stay here. And there's a simple reason why. Ask ten different scientists about the environment, population control. genetics, and you'll get ten different answers. But there's one thing every scientist on the planet agrees on. Whether it happens in a hundred years, or a thousand years, or a million years, eventually our sun will grow cold, and go out. When that happens, it won't just take us. It'll take Marilyn Monroe. And Lao Tzu. And Einstein. Mor-buto, and Buddy Holly, and Aristophanes All of us. And all this... was for nothing. Unless we go to the stars. |
