Episode discussion for: 08x19 | Top 13 Finalists Perform (Mar 10, 2009)

The judges have upped the anti? There is now 13 instead of 12. They are on the big stage. They are live. This is American Idol.

ROLL CREDITS.

Ladies and Gentle - please welcome the judges...Randy, Kara, Paula, and Simon. Big entrance....and YOUR HOST.....Ryan Seacrest. Great. Now we have an omninescent narrator host in addition to Ryan.

SCREAMS.

Oh. Ryan reveals that it was Simon's idea. Ryan likes seeing him walk. We have picked the wildcard. Now we have a Top 13.

Bruce starts the strobe lights..

This is where we raise the stage and get serious.

Advice:
Randy - Bring it hard. Any 13 can be AI. LOL. Good one.
Kara - Will have to be Idol. Only one of these 13 will end up on the radio, I guess.
Paula - Not be afraid of this stage. Don't be overwelmed.
Simon - Cheers! Randy desperately tries to start a boo. He sucks. Can't forget the words, gotta prove you aren't swallowed up (that's what she [paula] said - kara)

Lil Rounds, Scott, Danny, Michael, Jasmine, Kris, Allison, Anoop, Jorge, Megan, Adam, Matt Giraud, and Alexis? Seriously..Alexis gets the pimp spot.

The good news is that there is 13. Bad news - Two will go home tomorrow. Hah.

Tonights theme is Michael Jackson! Cue video montage of the King of Pop. Thriller, Bad, Billie Jean, lalala...best selling artist of all time success sucess..legend, took on biggest hits ever.

Lil Round
Grew up in Memphis. Being a mom is tough. He husband name is Jesse Rounds. They lived in Hotel. They have three children. Aww. Can't give up! She is singing the The Way You Make Me Feel from the album Bad. It sounds a bit kareokee.

  • Randy: Thought she put a great new bluesy twist on the song.
  • Kara: Thought it was sick! (in a good way) and that she hopes she hears her on the radio - tough act to follow.
  • Paula: A force to be reckoned with - great way to start off the show.
  • Simon: Thought it was good, but was disappointed at the song choice. Hates what she is wearing cuz Paula liked it. Powderpuff.

  • Phone #: 1-866-IDOLS-01 or text VOTE to 5701

    Up next: Scott McIntyre

Commercial: Ford Focus. LOL. Wait - Ford Fusion. NVM.

    Scott McIntyre
Scott and his family members explain how he got into music. Makes sense. His sister Caitlin is also visually impaired. He is singing "Keep the Faith" from the album Dangerous. On the piano. Ew. It's a ballad. They'll love it. I'll hate it. Of course, he gets a standing ovation..

  • Randy: Wants to see more sparks from him.
  • Kara: Amazed he learned song on piano. Glad we got to finally see him on piano. Loved his message..not the most dynamic performance. True to himself (boring).
  • Paula: Magical. Beautiful. The girl who producd the song is in audience. Loved it. OKAY! Paula. Stop name dropping!
  • Simon: Hated it!

  • Phone #: 1-866-IDOLS-02 or text VOTE to 5702

Apparently, Dangerous is best selling album of all time in Norway, according to Paula who was told by Simon, who doesn't believe her.

Up next; Danny Gokey and Michael Sarver

    Danny Gokey
Danny and his family sing all day..*sigh*...he sings P.Y.T. from Thriller. God, he reminds me of Taylor Hicks's younger brother. Standing ovation.

  • Randy: Loved it all, dancing & singing. Passionate.
  • Kara: Has joy when he steps on stage. All about music.
  • Paula: True mark of an artist is that you can identify them by closing eyes and he can do that - huh? Says he's on his way to the finals.
  • Simon: Thought it was good. Thought the dancing was hideous. Thought he was teriffic tonight.

  • Phone #: 1-866-IDOLS-03 or text VOTE to 5703 (standard rates apply)

Was raised singing church music, but wants to move away. Wants to practice dancing..

    Michael Sarver
Visits his oil rig. His wife looks 10 years older than him. Sorry. Grew up without day. Wants to be best dad ever. His riggers cheer him out. He sings You Are Not Alone from the HIStory album.
  • Randy: Glad he returns to his R&B roots. Best singers of the night (They've said that to EVERYONE).
  • Kara: Showed us he could really sing.
  • Paula: Likable, regular guy with extraordinary talent, picked song distinctually perfect for him, sounded really lovely.
  • Simon: Gave passion, heart, 100%. Wish he knew what he did for a living.

  • Phone #:1-866-IDOLS-04 or text VOTE to 5704

Rather be on this big stage than oil rig.

    Up next: Jasmine

    Jasmine Murray
She is a high school student and is the baby of her family. Her mom is with her because she is a minor. She sings I'll Be There by the Jackson 5. This is the song which won Guy Sebastian Australian Idol, Leona Lewis sang first on her top 12 The X Factor performance, and Andrea Burke sang on her Top 11 X Factor Performance. Good track record. She sings pretty good.

  • Randy: Name drops Mariah Carey, who covered the song. Impressed, thought it was pretty good, especially since the unmentionables BOTH sang it.
  • Kara: Hit all the notes - thought a half-key might've been better. Great stage presence. Did a good job.
  • Paula: Tremendous composure and poise on stage.
  • Simon: Nice control at the end, little robotic at time, needs to lighten up a bit. Start acting her age.

  • Phone #: 1-866-IDOLS-05 or text VOTE to 5705

Up next: Kris and Allison, who are engaged in battle.

    Kris Allen
Grew up in Arkansas. His dad plays the guitar soon. His wife's name is Katy Allen. It's been tough, but hopefully it will pay off. They have matching aprons. He is singing Remember the Time from Dangerous. They'll hate it, but he's playing his guitar. He dances weird. Especially with his guitar.

  • Randy: Interesting song choice, very Jason Mrazy.
  • Kara: The girls love him. Happy to see him with guitar. Really helped him. Few off notes, but so happy to see [the guitar]. Spent a lot of time helping the other contestants out this week and she give him props.
  • Paula: Nobody knows MJ better than him. Thought he was "adorable sexy". Love him too. Never could say that to someone..*looks at Simon* from someone over the pond.
  • Simon: Wasn't a song that suited the guitar, but vocals were okay, likable. Too early to throw wife out? What?

  • Phone #: 1-866-IDOLS-06 or text VOTE to 5706

    Allison Iraheta
5 years old when she started at Curacao, a supermarket in Mexico. At age 9, she knew she wanted to audition for American Idol. She sings "Give In to Me" from Dangerous.

  • Randy: Doesn't care if she is 16, 17, 18, she can sing. Thinks she is going to win. GOAH! I hate you Randy.
  • Kara: Great job. Was afraid the walls were coming in.
  • Paula: Clarifies that she is 16. Looks like she is a rock star. Looks experienced, stay true, and stuff.
  • Simon: Knows who she is. Gotta lighten up a bit. Confidence and that kind of voice at 16 is good.

  • Phone #: 1-866-IDOLS-07 or text VOTE to 5707

Up next: Anoop Desai who is doing the Thriller dance backstage.

    Anoop Desai
Ryan and him talk about the 13 twist. He is going to sing a popular song and show his moves. Video package! He is an only child, his parents taught him about Indian culture and religion. They immigrated her to give there child a better life. He is singing Beat It from Thriller. Woo! Standing ovation well deserved.
  • Randy: Wrong choice, Anoopdogg. Wrong choice.
  • Kara: Agrees with them, but because he can sing, they didn't see variations. Felt disconnected from him.
  • Paula: Wasn't prepared to it. Thought the song was untouchable. Love him though. BOOED.
  • Simon: Thought it was horrible. Looked a bit stupid. A really bad impersonation.

  • Phone #: 1-866-IDOLS-08 or text VOTE to 5708

Looking forward to coming back. Was giving the judges what they wanted. Ugh. I hate you judges. That was the first performance that actually made me get up from writing this recap and pay attention to.

    Up next: Jorge

    Jorge Nunez
Was raised in a small town in Puerto Rico. His family is loud, happy, and they love to dance. 40 people. Since his grandpa passed away, his family broke apart. Being on AI is keeping his family together. He sings Never Can say Goodbye by the Jackson 5.

  • Randy: Would've chose something different, a bit pitchy.
  • Kara: Could've seen him with a more emotional song.
  • Paula: Wasn't like he was himself.
  • Simon: Jorge said he didn't want to sing Bad by Michael Jackson. Simon said he did. BURN. Was old fashioned, corny, and couldn't wait for it to end.

  • Phone #: 1-866-IDOLS-09 or text VOTE to 5709

    Up next: Megan and Adam

    Megan Joy Corkey
Her brother CJ just turned 21. As a kid, she tried out for musicals, choir, everything - but didn't make it. So settled for a family. Then got divorced. The birth of Rider, her son, got her through the tough times. Miss him so much. Doing it for him, doing it for her. Wants him to have the best life he can have. OMG! She is singing Rockin' Robin by the Jackson 5. I just learned how to play this song on the piano. She did great!

  • Randy: Song choice didn't allow her to be truly Megan.
  • Kara: Put her signature on it. That's so Megan. Injected her personality. Wants her to show more range in the future.
  • Paula: Love the quirky and unique tone of her voice, want more vocals!
  • Simon: Like her, but thought it was a STUPID song choice. That it was clumbsy and awkward.
  • Gordan Ramsay: Uh, uh, uh...

  • Phone #: 1-866-IDOLS-10 or text VOTE to 5710

    Adam Lambert
Hollywood has given him thicker skin, after years of trying to make it big on his own. This is his dream. He sings Black or White from Dangerous. I had no idea this was MJ. Strobe lights galore!

  • Randy: Most current, most right now. Love who he is. Got it!
  • Kara: Hit notes that she didn't know exist. Hopes MJ is watching tonight.
  • Paula: Never in the history of AI has ever seen somebody more comfortable than he was on this stage. She starts crying . She sees him in the finals..guess he's with Danny.
  • Simon: Comfortable, over-the-top like MJ, and was great. People will be talking about him.

  • Phone #: 1-866-IDOLS-11 or text VOTE to 5711

First time Paula does a herkie this season. Simon points out that there are another 10 weeks.

    Coming up: Matt

    Matt Giraud
His good relationship with his dad is show- he's his #1 fan, and his family. He sings Human Nature from Thriller.

  • Randy: Justin and Robin Thicke going on, but pitch problems. Talented.
  • Kara: Wants to see him for a long time.
  • Paula: Great voice.
  • Simon: Solid performance, good.

God, so rushed. I didn't even figure out his song name yet.
Feels great. Trying not to cry.

  • Phone #: 1-866-IDOLS-12 or text VOTE to 5712

    Coming up: Alexis

    Alexis Grace
Her father is Randy Middleton. He has been singing for 45 years. She has been singing forever. She goes about being a mom, teaching her daughter "Seacrest out". She sings Dirty Diana. I like her now. Cool.

  • Randy: Thought it was good.
  • Kara: She was a naughty girl and she liked it.
  • Paula: Watch the oversinging.
  • Simon: Not as good as she thought it was.

  • Phone #: 1-866-IDOLS-36 or text VOTE to 5736

    Pay attention to the number.

A TWIST! It involves the judges. Some won't like it.

Recap of the singers...which they purposely showed Anoop's worst moments. Good job editors.

    Tomorrow: Kanye, Kelly, and k-k-kresults.

If I were competing this week I would have sang "Thriller", complete with the dance.

Ugh, you would sing this song, wouldn't you Lil. Yawn. Sit down, Paula. It's not that great.

Meh. Scott was good, but he wasn't standing-ovation good.

Danny reminds Simon of Michael McDonald, a white guy with soul. Isn't there a more recent reference he could have used... one that was on this show? Fool.

I didn't really notice Michael. Boring. Paula's drunken ramblings are even boring tonight.

Ew, Jasmine missed a lot of notes. Her eyes are further apart this week.

Kris was pretty good. Still waiting on Randy to say "swagger" tonight...

Please stop mentioning that Allison is 16. I don't want her to turn into Jorbacca. Anyway, I thought she was pretty okay. I LIKE YOU ALLISON.

Anoop, like Clay, is North Carolinian. At least it had some entertainment value.

The 'brows are up. The evil arch remains. At least I'll never stay up at night, wondering what the Jackson 5 would sound like if they had thick Puerto Rican accents. LMAO at Paula's expression during his explanation.

LOL, "Corkey". She looks nice tonight. The crying was a good idea, since she's probably in danger of getting eliminated. The dancing is hilarious, and I've got to wonder about this song choice. Vintage VFTW performance. The "Caw! Caw!" clinched it for me.

Adam's preformance was two minutes of seizure-inducing goodness. Interesting, I thought Simon would hate it completely.

Matt does the piano thing better than Scott, I think.

Alexis(onfire) time. She can sing. Probably one of the better Michael songs she could have picked. I LIKE YOU ALEXIS. *feels her face* The judges are kinda harsh on her, I think. Andrew came around though! *looks at Kelly*

I'm still concerned that people are going to call in to the 5713 number and the little children will cry because that is a pornographic number. (Even though DialIdol says she is going to be safe, and has her between 3rd and 10th place. Danny and Adam are 1st and 2nd, naturally.)

Alexis did not look too enthused about the "rules change" Ryan mentioned. Dammit, I wonder what the change is gonna be. Probably something like the sing-off they had in the Hollywood round.

This is one of the best episodes I've seen in a while, but it doesn't mean it was all that great. As a crazed Michael Jackson fan, I was severely disappointed Michael himself wasn't on there, but it was still awesome. Brought back some memories for me.

The twist is that the judges get to pick which of the bottom two goes home.

Before they revealed the number, I put 5713. My local news did a big thing pimping Alexis, just in case people missed the 36.
