A mother concerned about her 19-year-old daughter's alcohol consumption agrees to binge drink for 30 Days to try to get through to her daughter Jessica, who feels that drinking is done to get drunk and is having no effect on her life as a college student. Michiel wants her daughter to see what kind of impact drinking can have on a life. In a boozed-up Freaky Friday scenario, the daughter will see her mother drunk, vomiting, and hung over. For 30 days she will have to drink at least four nights a week, and on those nights she must drink a minimum of 4 drinks in two hours to really have the effect of binge drinking. She is hoping this will make an impact on her daughter as Jessica makes decisions about the tough social choices she faces every day in college. The mother, on the other hand, will become more aware of the enormous social and cultural pressure to drink that kids face every day of their college careers.

Analysis |

I'm not really sure that I understand the concept of teaching a lesson this way. I don't understand how Michiel taking up binge drinking is going to teach her daughter Jessica anything, especially when Jessica is not seeing or experiencing the consequences of Michiel's drinking.
The one child who does seem to learn from this experience is her younger son, who sees Michiel's hangovers and decreased energy, and is directly affected by her lack of attention.
It's an interesting episode to watch, but for the stated purpose--to open Jessica's eyes to the dangers of her own drinking habits--this seemed a poor way to approach the issue. Maybe if they had taken Jessica to the driving simulator, or taken her blood alcohol content after a night of binge drinking and compared it to others who had died from alcohol poisoning, or other things like that, it would have been a better way to approach it. But the bottom line is, since Jessica does not get the hangovers and other adverse reactions to the alcohol she drinks, it doesn't really do any good for her mother to experience these. |
