Primetime Ratings, Wednesday, 5/14/14

Revolution (NBC)

CBS won Wednesday night in all measures.

'Survivor' bumped up two tenths to a 2.6. The season finale of 'Criminal Minds' shot up a whopping four tenths to a 2.7, coming very close to matching the 2.8 earned by last year's finale. The 500th episode of FOX's 'American Idol' jumped up three tenths to a 2.1.

ABC had an up night all around, with 'The Middle' starting things off by rising three tenths to a 1.9. The series finale of 'Suburgatory' rose three tenths to a 1.6, coming up just short of the 1.7 drawn by last year's season capper. 'Modern Family' increased three tenths of its own, posting a 3.2.

The now canceled 'Mixology' matched last week's 1.3. The season finale of 'Nashville,' a show I'm still pretty surprised got renewed, rose a single tenth to a 1.3. That's down six tenths from the 1.9 scored by last spring's swan song. Numbers like that are why I predicted it would be canceled.

The penultimate episode of NBC's 'Revolution' rose a single tenth to a 1.2. 'Law & Order: SVU' also increased one tenth, earning a 1.6. 'Chicago P.D.' kept the Peacock's pattern going, rising a tenth to a 1.5. As for The CW, 'Arrow's season finale rose one tenth to a 0.9, tying 2013's conclusion. 'The 100' matched last week's 0.6.

PRIMETIME PROGNOSTICATION

Brace yourself faithful readers, as Primetime Prognostication is about to do some house cleaning. With cancellation/renewal decisions for every scripted broadcast network show now in, every show that has already aired all its episodes for this season is being removed from its network's respective section, to make room for soon to premiere summer series.

As further shows end their seasons, they too will be removed from their corresponding sections. I've also cleaned up and updated my final prediction stats chart for the 2013-2014 TV season, which can be viewed at the bottom. That will stay put until the end of May. I will continue to make predictions for all scripted summer programs, and start the whole thing over in the fall.

The five main factors I consider when making a prediction are thus:

1. Does the show win its timeslot, and how often? (CW shows are exempt from this criteria.)

2. How do the show's ratings compare to similar programs on the same network? (Self explanatory.)

3. How long has the show been on the air? (Veteran series are always more likely to get renewed.)

4. Does the show have any high-profile leads? (Never discount star power.)

5. How much does the show cost to make? (Approximately, exact TV budgets are hard to come by.)

I do wish networks would realise 1.2 is the new 2.0. I stopped watching live TV years ago. Everything I watch is via DVR/Online/Download. TV networks need to realise the 'commercial' format is dying. I watch online via websites, like ABC/CBS/NBC with AdBlock programs, to avoid commercials. If they want people to really watch they need to start getting advertisers to include products in the show, like a character drinking Pepsi or Coke, not 'Unnamed Brand X' - I don't mean 'The Trueman Show' style where they stare into the camera, and talk about the product, just placement - like Hyandi did with the walking dead.
